Two Young Men Arrested for Series of Robberies Against Elderly Women in Castellón. Two young men have been detained in Castellón, suspected of committing nine robberies targeting elderly women. The perpetrators used electric scooters to make quick getaways. The victims sustained serious injuries.
In Castellón, police have detained two young men, aged 19 and 20, suspected of a series of bold street robberies. According to the police, over two months they carried out nine attacks on elderly women, snatching gold jewelry from them right on the street. After each attack, the perpetrators escaped on electric scooters, which allowed them to quickly disappear from the crime scene.
The method was almost always the same: the suspects chose older women whom they considered the most vulnerable and suddenly attacked, ripping gold chains and other jewelry off them. As a result of these attacks, many victims suffered serious injuries—broken collarbones, ribs, wrists, and shoulders. Some victims fell onto the asphalt and ended up in the hospital.
Police note that both detainees already had criminal records. The investigation established that the stolen jewelry was sold to intermediaries on the resale market. It was the attempts to sell the stolen goods that helped identify the suspects and uncover the circle of people who assisted them in fencing the stolen items.
Some of the stolen jewelry has been returned to the owners. According to investigators, the criminals operated in coordination and carefully selected their victims based on age and physical vulnerability. The use of electric scooters became a key element of their scheme—this transport allowed them to leave the crime scene quickly and made it harder to catch them.
In recent years, Spain has seen a rise in crimes involving electric scooters, especially in densely built cities with developed street infrastructure. Police warn residents to stay alert on the streets, particularly the elderly. For comparison, there have also been high-profile decisions in other areas: for example, the Spanish Supreme Court recently ordered Antena 3 to stop airing the final round of El Rosco in Pasapalabra, which became a notable event for the media market (more about the court decision).
According to police, the investigation is ongoing, and both suspects remain in custody. Authorities emphasize that the recovery of part of the stolen property was made possible by the swift actions of investigators and cooperation with the jewelry resale market. In Spain, such crimes are of particular concern due to their targeting of the most vulnerable groups in the population.
