Cádiz Cancels Unveiling of Juan Carlos Aragón’s Star Due to Violence Conviction. Authorities in Cádiz have canceled the unveiling of Juan Carlos Aragón’s star on the Walk of Fame. The decision follows the disclosure of a domestic violence ruling. The measure was taken after an appeal from the artist’s former partner.

In Cádiz, the ceremony to unveil a star on the Walk of Fame in honor of Juan Carlos Aragón — one of the most renowned songwriters for the local carnival — has been cancelled. The decision was made after the artist's former partner submitted documents to the city hall regarding his conviction for domestic violence. The event was scheduled to take place near the Falla Theater, but city officials announced its postponement without setting a new date.

The scandal erupted after Paqui Pino, Aragón's former common-law wife, sent Cádiz city hall a copy of the 2010 court verdict. It states that in August 2005, Aragón inflicted physical injuries on her and sent threats. The court found him guilty on several counts, including assault and threats, sentencing him to one year in prison and nearly two years of restraining order from the victim.

Pino also attached medical certificates, child custody documents, and a letter stating that Aragón cannot be considered a role model because of repeated instances of violence. According to her, she is tired of the numerous public honors bestowed upon her former partner despite his past. In a conversation with El País, she said this was the first time she had decided to speak publicly about what happened.

The revelations have caused a stir in Cádiz, where Aragón was considered a carnival icon. One of the city's schools bears his name, and many of his songs address social issues, including the fight against domestic violence. However, as locals note, rumors about his past had long circulated in the city, but there was no official confirmation until now.

The Juan Carlos Aragón Foundation, headed by his widow Luisa Tejonero, announced a temporary suspension of all activities and has begun reviewing the received documents. The organization stressed it would continue to protect the composer's cultural legacy, but did not specify its next steps.

Many people expressed support for Paki Pino on social media. The political parties Adelante and PSOE also called for the cancellation of public honors for Aragón. Cádiz City Hall issued a brief statement confirming the postponement of the ceremony due to the family-related complaint and the attached documents. It remains unclear what will happen to the previously installed but closed star on the Walk of Fame.

In Spain, domestic violence remains a major public concern. Victims have access to the 24-hour hotline 016, as well as email and WhatsApp support. In emergencies, people can contact the police or use the ALERTCOPS app. It is important to remember that calls to 016 do not appear on phone bills, but should be deleted from the device's call history.

In recent years, there have been repeated debates in Spain about naming public institutions after famous figures. For example, the status of natural areas in Andalusia was recently discussed, which also sparked public reaction — you can learn more about this in the article on the court decision regarding Doñana Marsh: legal dispute over the boundaries of the reserve in Huelva and Seville.
