A washer’s detergent drawer may contain an insert or tab that changes how liquid or powder detergent reaches the drum. The design varies by machine: some models use a movable insert, while others rely on separate compartments and model-specific instructions. The dispenser is part of the washer’s programmed water system. During the relevant stage of a cycle, water flows into a selected compartment and carries detergent into the drum. Depending on the design, an insert may keep liquid detergent from draining too early; powder detergent may require the insert to be removed or repositioned. It does not necessarily release detergent gradually throughout the entire wash.
How the Tab Works
If an insert is in the wrong position for the detergent being used, detergent may drain prematurely or remain in the drawer. That can waste product or leave residue, and may affect wash results. A drawer that does not empty properly can also point to blocked channels or low water pressure. Too much detergent or an incorrectly fitted insert can cause the same problem.
Setting the Tab for Liquid or Powder

On some washers, a movable insert is set one way for liquid detergent and another way, or removed, for powder; the correct orientation varies by model. Follow the drawer markings and the manufacturer’s instructions, and observe any maximum-fill line. Use the recommended detergent quantity for the load and product.
Correct setup helps the dispenser deliver detergent as intended, but wash performance also depends on the selected cycle, which should suit the load and detergent dosage. If detergent remains in the drawer, check that the compartment and its channels are clean and that the insert is seated as directed before assuming its position is the only cause.
What Happens If You Get It Wrong
Using liquid detergent with an insert set for powder, or powder with an insert set for liquid, can lead to premature flow, detergent left behind or residue. These problems may contribute to disappointing cleaning results. Treat incorrect use as a possible maintenance issue, not a guaranteed cause of internal damage; persistent dispensing problems may warrant checking the manual or contacting the manufacturer’s service team.
Why the Fabric Softener Compartment Is Different
The softener compartment commonly relies on a siphon and a maximum-fill line rather than the same liquid-versus-powder adjustment used in the basic-wash compartment. Softener is generally dispensed during the rinse phase. Overfilling or residue in the compartment can interfere with dispensing, so clean the drawer and siphon components as directed in the washer’s manual.
Some people use vinegar in laundry, but it should not be treated as a universally recommended substitute for fabric softener or as a washer-cleaning method. Follow the appliance maker’s care instructions and the product-label directions.

Before starting a load, check which compartment is intended for the detergent you are using and whether its insert needs adjusting. The correct setup depends on the washer model, so rely on its markings and manual rather than a rule that applies to every machine. Keeping the drawer clean and respecting fill lines can help prevent waste and residue when detergent is measured as directed.
