In September, the average price of a used car in Spain fell to 17,254 euros, down 5.51% from September 2025. Buyers now pay over 1,000 euros less than a year ago, information from figures from Coches.net.
Madrid remains the most expensive region for used cars, with an average price of 19,057 euros. País Vasco follows at 18,276 euros, while Cataluña is close behind at 18,197 euros. The lowest prices are in Baleares and Castilla La Mancha, with Extremadura also among the cheapest, averaging just over 15,000 euros.
In the first nine months of 2026, Spain registered 1,640,051 used passenger cars and SUVs, a 2.6% increase year on year despite falling prices, ABC Motor reported.
No region escaped the price slide. Baleares saw the sharpest fall, with prices down 11.1%. Asturias followed at 9.6%, while Aragón was down 7.6%. Madrid’s decline was much smaller, at 1.9%. Navarra and Cantabria also recorded only slight decreases.
Car age is becoming a bigger consideration for buyers. Vehicles between one and three years old averaged 27,666 euros, almost unchanged from last year. Four- to five-year-old cars averaged 23,786 euros, down 1.2%. The most expensive group, known as seminuevos, settled at 32,166 euros, a 3.8% drop from last year.
Sector analysts said demand is shifting toward newer vehicles. Sales of cars up to five years old grew by 5.2% in the first nine months of 2026, accounting for 26% of the market, eldiario.es reported. Vehicles over 15 years old still make up the largest age group, representing 41.6% of all used car sales.
Fuel type is also shaping the market. Diesel used cars took the hardest hit, with their average price falling to 13,295 euros, down 10.6% from September 2025. No other vehicle category saw a bigger fall this year.
Madrid’s lead in the used car market is nothing new. As reported earlier, the capital continues to outpace other regions in sales and prices, even as prices drop across Spain.
Prices are falling everywhere, especially for diesel models. Buyers have more options and better deals, while sellers face a tougher market. Only the best-priced cars will sell fast now.
