Spanish Student Project Wins Award for Reusable Jewelry Packaging. A project from Valencia has been recognized for turning jewelry packaging into a functional item. The solution from students in Castellón supports the trend toward sustainability and reuse.
At the XVII Premios Nacionales de Envase ceremony in Valencia, one of the main winners was the LJC-Luxury Jewel Case project. This is packaging for jewelry that can be repurposed as a home organizer and protective case after delivery. The design was presented by students from Universitat Jaume I in Castellón — Lara Valls and Cristina Alexandra Ienasescu. Their solution stood out among more than 200 entries submitted by students from 34 Spanish universities and design schools.
The main feature of the LJC-Luxury Jewel Case is its transformation from an ordinary cardboard tube into a multifunctional item. After transportation, the packaging is not discarded but becomes a part of everyday life: it protects jewelry from dust and light, serves as a display and a personal storage unit. The design incorporates three elements — the body, the panel, and the base, as well as a telescopic lock and internal guides to secure the items. All materials are recyclable, biodegradable, and free of plastic.
The project was carried out at the request of Alpesa, a company specializing in the production of cardboard tubes. The award's organizers, Clúster de Innovación en Envase y Embalaje, note that such initiatives foster real collaboration between universities and businesses, as well as open up new opportunities for young professionals.
Among other recognized solutions are a flexible cardboard shoe box that adapts to the shape of the pair and can be used at home as an organizer, as well as a cardboard shopping bag that transforms into a biodegradable planter. The jury also highlighted a candy display in the shape of a smiling cyclops, a precise powdered product dispensing system, and a tray for air fryers that filters fat during cooking.
The current trend in the packaging market in Spain is the search for new functions for familiar materials, waste reduction, and greater user convenience. According to russpain.com, recent years have seen increasing demand for eco-friendly solutions in the country, with major manufacturers and retailers increasingly introducing reusable and biodegradable packaging. This is linked both to changes in legislation and shifts in consumer habits: residents of Spain are more frequently choosing products with minimal environmental impact.
