The wildfire in Zaragoza’s Cinco Villas region has reached the urban limits of Asín, damaging homes and forcing residents to evacuate. Emergency services report that flames have consumed more than 4,500 hectares of farmland, scrub and forest. The fire is described as the region’s most complex emergency of its kind in recent years. Aragón authorities later treated it as a major summer 2026 fire, with restoration work spanning several municipalities, including Orés, Asín, Ejea de los Caballeros, Luesia, Biota and Uncastillo.
Regional emergency councillor Roberto Bermúdez de Castro said the fire remains at level 2 alert. The Military Emergency Unit (UME) is deployed, with reinforcements arriving from Valencia, Castilla y León, La Rioja and Navarra. Around 250 personnel are involved in the operation, which spans multiple administrations. The fire entered Asín overnight and affected ten houses; three suffered severe damage, including one with extensive interior destruction. Authorities announced plans for psychosocial support for affected residents and were preparing a decree to provide financial assistance. Aragón’s later aid structure was formalised under Order ECE/1370/2026 of 23 September, establishing urgent rules and a call for subsidies to repair damage and compensate losses from the summer fires. The scheme is registered with the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) as SA.125095, file AE/CNMC/054/26.
Forecasts for Thursday remain concerning. Officials expect strong southern winds to intensify from 11 a.m., with gusts of 30 to 40 km/h. Daytime humidity is predicted to drop sharply, further complicating firefighting efforts. Temperatures are expected to ease slightly, but highs will still reach 35 degrees Celsius. Two regional roads, the A1204 and the CV 813 between Asín and Orés, remain closed because of the fire.
Evacuations are continuing, with 80 people currently sheltered in the sports hall of Ejea de los Caballeros. Residents of Orés, Asín and Luesia, as well as the hamlet of Malpica de Arba, were relocated as a precaution. Three care homes in the affected villages were also evacuated, and 54 elderly residents were transferred to a facility in Zaragoza. Bermúdez de Castro warned that containing and extinguishing the fire could take days, given its scale and complexity.
Two new fires broke out early Thursday in the province of Huesca, in Peña Montañesa and Castanesa. Both were attributed to ongoing dry thunderstorms in Aragón. Emergency services are monitoring the incidents closely to prevent further escalation.
In the months after the fire, Aragón’s Department of Environment and Tourism described restoration measures intended to limit erosion and support recovery. Work included small barriers in ravines and erosion channels, fascines on slopes, straw applications to protect soil and on-site wood chipping. The regional government said decisions were guided by erosion risk, slope, soil characteristics, the capacity of vegetation to recover and access to the terrain. By October, officials were discussing restoration needs alongside improvements to wildfire prevention and response with local authorities.
The economic impact also reached local businesses and self-employed workers. Under a €3 million Aragón support call, regional economic authorities received 44 applications seeking a total of €433,189.19. The Orés and Cinco Villas area accounted for 18 applications requesting €80,397.90, of which €74,670.78 was initially considered eligible. Applications from Orés and the Cinco Villas area, together with those from another affected area, made up 42 of the 44 submissions. They remained subject to case-by-case review.
A separate national measure approved €9 million in aid for agricultural holdings affected by fires declared between 1 January and 30 September 2026. The scheme covered an estimated 270,000 hectares affected by fires nationwide, including around 60,000 hectares of agricultural land. It applied to eligible holders of combined agricultural-insurance policies. The aid was intended to supplement part of the insurance premium and compensate insured production losses not otherwise indemnified. This national structure included no allocation specific to the Cinco Villas fire.

Its final hotspots were extinguished on 3 October, after more than 60,000 people had been evacuated. Those figures relate to the separate fire complex, not the Zaragoza blaze.
