A string of setbacks experienced by football club Barcelona following matches against PSG and Sevilla has led to noticeable tension within the squad. The most recent game at Pizjuán stadium ended in a heavy defeat for the Catalans, sparking a strong reaction from both players and management.
Sporting director Deco reminded the team of the need for constant hard work, emphasizing that skill alone is not enough to achieve their goals. His message was primarily directed at the players, but it also indirectly affected head coach Hansi Flick. Flick is now at the center of attention, as concrete decisions are expected from him to change the current situation.
Questions for Flick have arisen not only because of the results, but also due to the way the team starts matches. In their last eight games, Barcelona have conceded first on four occasions. Three times, they managed to turn things around, but not in their latest match. This issue is not new; however, the coaching staff has so far failed to impress upon the players the importance of maximum focus from the opening minutes.
Concerns about lack of focus at the start of matches have been discussed within the club for some time. Sometimes the final score hides this problem, but recently it has become apparent. Young defender Cubarsí and Deco noted that in Sevilla, the team took to the pitch without enough intensity. Despite regular discussions, the situation remains unchanged.
Another aspect that raises questions is preparation for matches and tactical decisions. In the game against Sevilla, the strength of the opponent was not taken into account—they look much stronger this season and had more recovery time. Flick chose a less aggressive lineup in midfield, preferring Pedri and De Jong, although it would have made more sense to start Casado or Eric Garcia. As a result, there were no players left on the bench who could strengthen the team over the course of the match.
A similar situation occurred last season in the match against Osasuna, when the team also underestimated their opponent and conceded four goals. Then, as now, the opposition started with intense pressing, which Barcelona was unprepared for. Flick needs to keep in mind that some matches require a more pragmatic approach and reliance on players who can fight for every ball.
The coaching staff faces the task of increasing player commitment and adjusting tactics based on the strength of the opponent. Only this way can mistakes be avoided and stability restored to the team.
