Electric and hybrid cars take over the market: Spain transforms its vehicle fleet

In November 2025, sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in Spain doubled, reaching a new all-time high. The market is changing rapidly, and experts predict even more records ahead.

In November 2025, the Spanish car market saw a real breakthrough: sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids doubled compared to the previous year. Over the month, 23,367 new electrified vehicles were sold, accounting for more than one-fifth of all cars sold. In the first ten months of the year, Spaniards bought 219,583 electric and hybrid vehicles—twice as many as during the same period in 2024. The market share of electrified cars increased by nearly 8 percentage points, reaching 17.56%.

Overall, alternative powertrains—electric motors, hybrids, and gas engines—continue to gain popularity. In November, sales rose by 39.8%, with 70,254 units sold. Over the year, Spaniards purchased 713,888 such vehicles, 45.6% more than the previous year. Alternative vehicles now account for 57.11% of the market.

Electric cars

Sales of all-electric vehicles in November rose by 64.7% to 10,707 units. This made up 9.52% of all cars sold that month. Over the year, Spaniards bought 102,583 electric cars, an increase of 83.5% compared to 2024. Electric vehicles accounted for 8.21% of total annual car sales.

Plug-in hybrids

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) posted even more impressive growth: in November, sales surged by 155% to 12,660 units, representing 11.26% of the monthly market. Over the year, Spaniards purchased 117,000 of these vehicles—a 112% rise. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 9.36% of total annual sales.

Hybrids and gas-powered vehicles

Conventional hybrids (non-plug-in) are also continuing to strengthen their position. In November, sales rose by 16.8% to 41,161 vehicles, accounting for 36.6% of the market. Over the year, 439,021 hybrids were sold, an increase of 25.6% compared to the previous year. These vehicles made up 35.1% of total annual sales.

Gas-powered vehicles also saw gains: in November, sales increased by 60.5% to 5,726 units, representing 5.1% of the market. Over the year, Spaniards purchased 55,283 gas-powered cars—a growth of 75.2%. Gas-powered vehicles accounted for 4.42% of total annual sales.

Passenger car market

The segment of passenger cars with alternative powertrains (electric, hybrid, gas) grew by 60.9% in November compared to the previous year. A total of 67,991 such vehicles were sold during the month. Annual sales increased by 45.1% to reach 693,522 units, representing 66.33% of the passenger car market.

Growth has been especially strong in the segment of passenger electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids: in November, their sales doubled, reaching 21,315 units, which represents 22.65% of the market—up 10 percentage points from last year. Pure electric vehicles (BEV) saw 9,316 sales (+60.9%), and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) accounted for 11,999 (+146%). Over the year, Spaniards bought 201,750 electric cars and hybrids—twice as many as in 2024. Their market share reached 19.3%.

Expert opinion

ANFAC CEO José López-Tafall noted that November marked a turning point for the electrified vehicle market. For the first time this year, sales exceeded 200,000 units. According to him, the pace of electrification is impressive, but to achieve climate goals and update the vehicle fleet, an even faster acceleration is needed.
