Antonio Matos, widower of Karitina Goyanes, speaks about his grief and the future of the family business one year after the tragedy

"I live like a walking dead man": the confession of Caritina Goyanes' widower

A year after the death of Karitina Goyanes, her husband Antonio Matos has broken his silence. He spoke about his pain, the series of tragedies in the Goyanes-Lapique family, and his plans to preserve his late wife’s catering company, Sixsense, as a business legacy for their children.

A year after the sudden passing of businesswoman Caritina Goyanes, her husband Antonio Matos spoke publicly for the first time about his life after the tragedy. The widower shared his feelings during a television program, noting that he does not intend to hide his pain and continues to feel his wife’s presence every day.

The past year has been a series of heavy losses for the Goyanes-Lapique family. Shortly before the 46-year-old Caritina died of a heart attack on August 7, 2024, her father, film producer Carlos Goyanes, passed away. The day after Caritina’s death, her brother Tito Goyanes also died. On January 10, 2025, the family bade farewell to Manuel Lapique, brother of Caritina’s mother, Cari Lapique, who passed away after a long illness. In light of these events, the family, including Antonio Matos, Caritina’s mother Cari, and her sister Carla Goyanes, did not attend the memorial service at San Agustín parish church.

During his appearance on Antena 3’s program «Y ahora Sonsoles», Antonio Matos admitted that the initial shock of the loss made him feel like a “walking dead man.” He emphasized he does not want to project the image of a strong man who cannot cry, and openly speaks about his grief. According to journalists, during another interview, Matos was unable to hold back tears while recounting his experiences.

Antonio Matos sees his main task as preserving the legacy and memory of his wife. He is the executor of Caritina Goyanes’s will, according to which her catering company Sixsense passed on to their children. In business, the couple complemented each other: Antonio managed finances and staff, while Caritina oversaw production processes. Now, Matos intends to continue the business so that, in the future, their children—who are still too young—can decide for themselves whether they want to pursue it.

Antonio and his children receive vital day-to-day support from their grandmother, Cari Lapique, who lives in a neighboring house. This allows her to spend plenty of time with her grandchildren, which is crucial for their well-being. In turn, Cari Lapique and her daughter, Carla Goyanes—who have taken on the management of Carlos Goyanes’s business legacy—are ready to offer Antonio any help he may need. The widower himself says that he is living day by day, not yet having fully processed everything that has happened, and tries to follow the principle that ‘life goes on.’
