Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone addressed the media ahead of the upcoming match against London’s Arsenal, emphasizing the significance of the encounter for his team. The Argentine specialist noted that this match could be one of the toughest for Los Colchoneros in the group stage of the Champions League.
Comparing the opponent to Liverpool, Simeone pointed out that the London side has a distinct playing style and demonstrates a high level of organization. According to him, Arsenal does not stray from its football philosophy; on the contrary, it reinforces it by bringing in the right players. The coach recalled that the London team fought for the national championship title until the very end, highlighting their character and consistency. The upcoming match is expected to be played at a high tempo.
Speaking about the need for victory, Simeone expressed confidence in Atlético’s chosen path of development. He noted that the team continues to improve and is focused on achieving success in the crucial away Champions League fixture, which is vital for their tournament prospects.
The coach shared his vision of the match, anticipating a tense battle with high intensity. In his view, the opponents defend well, and Atlético will try to capitalize on their strengths to threaten Arsenal’s goal.
Simeone paid special attention to set pieces, noting that the Londoners have players who can deliver dangerous shots on goal, as well as tall players who are strong in the air. He recalled that in 2014, Atlético often succeeded precisely thanks to set pieces.
When asked whether a draw would satisfy him, the coach recalled the previous meeting, when the team played most of the match with a numerical disadvantage, and in that case a draw would have been acceptable. However, the task is different now.
Addressing the situation with Alexander Sørloth, Simeone noted that such circumstances are common for other players as well. According to him, there are rarely squad members with little playing time, with the exception of Carlos Martín and Marcos. The coach emphasized that the team values a diversity of qualities, and everyone must be ready to prove themselves when given a chance.
In conclusion, Simeone commented on the work of Mikel Arteta, noting that the Arsenal manager managed to preserve and develop the team’s distinctive style from the very beginning.
