Rodrigo Mendoza, who plays for Elche, is making a confident statement at the Youth World Cup, where he represents Spain. In this tournament, he has become a key figure in his team’s attacking efforts, which are gradually gaining momentum and show no intention of stopping.
Mendoza is no longer an unknown player: the club has recognized his potential by setting a substantial release clause. However, few know how his character was shaped or where his competitive spirit comes from. Rodrigo was born in Murcia and spent his childhood in the region’s capital before moving with his family to Molina de Segura. It was there that he started playing football at the local Altorreal school.
From an early age, football became an integral part of his life. His father, a big fan of the sport, and his younger brother, with whom Rodrigo often competed both in the yard and at home, had a significant influence on his passion. These backyard matches strengthened his character and made him exceptionally competitive.
In addition to football, Mendoza has always had an interest in basketball. Not only did he play it as a child, but he also continues to practice the sport to this day. At one point, the young athlete even thought he was better at basketball than at football. Together with his brother, he spent a lot of time on outdoor courts, dreaming of one day becoming like Stephen Curry. His admiration for this basketball player stems from Curry’s ability to create opportunities, decide the outcome of games, and influence his team not only through his play but also through his leadership qualities.
As a child, Rodrigo’s idol was Lionel Messi, whose technique and playing style inspired him to pick up the ball and try to dribble past every opponent. Later, he began to closely follow Andrés Iniesta, and now his attention is focused on Pedri. All of these athletes share exceptional skills in organizing attacks and controlling the game, as well as the ability to lead their teammates.
Today, Mendoza continues to grow, bringing together traits of his idols from different sports. His versatility and leadership qualities make him a prominent figure not only at his club but also in the national youth team.
