Spring surge in activity why cockroach infestations are rising in homes

How to deal with cockroaches emerging in spring

With the arrival of spring in Spain, many people are noticing a sudden increase in cockroach activity. Changes in temperature and humidity create ideal conditions for these insects to appear indoors. Which measures can help prevent them from entering your home and how can you minimize the risk of their reproduction in residential spaces

With the arrival of spring, the likelihood of cockroaches appearing in residential homes in Spain increases noticeably. Rising temperatures and higher humidity after winter create favorable conditions for these insects to emerge from the inaccessible, warm spots where they hid during the colder months. Even at temperatures as low as 15-20 degrees Celsius, cockroaches become more active, searching for food and water, which leads to their presence in kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, it is during this period that many people first notice signs of cockroaches, although their peak activity falls during the summer months.

Cockroaches are able to survive the cold months by hiding in cracks, behind household appliances, inside walls, and near pipes. As soon as the temperature rises, they come out of hiding and actively move around in search of food sources. In spring, females lay eggs in protected, humid places, which leads to a rapid increase in the population. Particularly problematic are the individuals that enter apartments from the sewage and ventilation systems, using any available openings and cracks within building structures.

Entry routes

The main routes by which cockroaches enter homes are cracks in walls, floors, and doorways, as well as unprotected ventilation ducts and sewage pipes. Insects often make their way in through barely noticeable gaps around pipes beneath sinks and bathtubs, as well as holes in building facades. If there has been a cockroach problem in the past, it is recommended to install seals on doors, especially those leading to basements, garages, or stairwells. Fine mesh screens over rarely used drains and regular inspection of ventilation ducts also provide extra protection.

The condition of the kitchen also plays an important role: leftover crumbs, food scraps, and open trash bins become an easy target for cockroaches. Using containers with tightly sealing lids not only helps prevent odors from spreading but also blocks insect entry. Pay special attention to grease build-up—behind microwaves, stoves, and inside extractor hoods. These areas are common breeding spots when there is constant moisture.

Prevention and control

To prevent a cockroach infestation, it is important to fix leaking faucets and pipes promptly, avoid leaving dirty dishes and standing water in sinks, and prevent water from accumulating in trays under houseplants. Regularly airing out the kitchen and bathroom reduces humidity, making these areas less attractive to insects. If cockroaches do appear, it is easier to eliminate them in the early stages before their population increases.

Preventive measures include thorough cleaning, sealing all possible entry points, and monitoring the condition of utility systems. It is important to remember that cockroaches can survive on minimal food and water, so regularly checking hard-to-reach places and maintaining cleanliness are key strategies to keep them away.

Cockroach behavior patterns

Cockroaches are among the most resilient insects, capable of adapting to a variety of environments. In urban settings, they often settle near sources of heat and moisture, which explains their frequent presence in kitchens and bathrooms. Females lay eggs in special capsules that protect their offspring from adverse conditions. Thanks to their rapid reproduction and ability to find shelter even in the smallest crevices, cockroaches quickly colonize new areas. Their presence in a home may indicate issues with sealing or sanitation.
