Europe’s Largest Christmas Market Found in Craiova, Romania

Forget Germany and France. The real Christmas magic is waiting for you here

Discover a new Christmas capital. This Romanian city will amaze you with its festive spirit and unique atmosphere. Find out all the details about this magical destination.

While most eyes remain fixed on the traditional markets in Strasbourg and Berlin, a new and unexpected leader has quietly emerged in their shadow. In Craiova, Romania, a Christmas market has sprung up that now outshines all its well-known competitors in scale. What began as a local secret just a few years ago has transformed into a continent-wide event, surprising even the most seasoned travelers.

Craiova’s secret to success lies in crafting its own unique identity. Rather than copying the familiar Central European aesthetic, this Romanian city has built an entire universe where imagination, modern technology, and deep-rooted traditions are woven together. The result is a massive amusement park spanning more than 280,000 square meters. Every year, the lights, music, and themed areas change, turning the city into a living, ever-evolving set.

This year, organizers abandoned the concept of several independent worlds in favor of a unified theme — ‘The Nutcracker.’ This beloved fairytale runs through everything: the squares, streets, and parks. Each location becomes a unique fragment of a magical story. Mihai Viteazul Square has turned into a gigantic Land of Sweets, English Park has become a Toyland, and the Doljana area resembles an endless carousel of spinning lights. There’s space for a traditional Christmas on Fratii Buzesti Square, and in front of the National Theatre, the residence of Papa Noel unfolds.

Despite its enormous size, you can walk around the entire area in just 20 minutes—if, of course, you manage to resist the temptation to stop. It’s nearly impossible to avoid snapping photos, taking a ride, or just watching the light show. The wooden cabins, hand-painted by local artists, create a cozy, artisan atmosphere that blends surprisingly well with the futuristic installations.

The attractions deserve special mention. Craiova is home to the tallest Papa Noel sleigh in Eastern Europe—a giant structure offering panoramic views of the market. The ice rink and the Ferris wheel are also popular, letting visitors take in the full scale of the city’s dazzling lights. As night falls, millions of lights switch on at once, transforming the streets into glowing tunnels that seem straight out of a fairy tale.

A highlight for every visitor is the daily show everyone wants to capture. Around 6:30 p.m., Papa Noel flies over the main square, greeting guests in Romanian. The spectacle draws huge crowds, so it’s best to arrive early.

Gastronomy plays just as important a role. On Teodor Aman Street, a food court pops up with traditional Romanian dishes: steaming soups, hot sausages, stuffed breads, and sweets prepared fresh on site.

The fair will be open from November 14, 2025, to January 4, 2026. Craiova is not a metropolitan capital, and that’s its charm. The city maintains a relaxed pace, letting you enjoy the holiday without the hustle and crowds common in more popular destinations.
