The Perfect Hiking Destination in Galicia You Can’t Miss in 2025

Secret Trails of Galicia: Discover a Hidden Paradise on the Ulla River

Discover northern Spain, where nature offers unique landscapes. It’s the ideal place for your next getaway. Learn about Galicia’s hidden gem.

When people think of Spain, their imagination often conjures up sun-drenched beaches and bustling cities. Yet the country’s untouched soul hides in its lush northern regions. Galicia, with its emerald hills, ancient forests, and distinctive culture, offers a completely different travel experience. In the heart of Lugo province, far from well-trodden tourist trails, lies the municipality of Monterroso—a place where nature and history intertwine, creating the perfect setting for those seeking tranquility and outdoor adventure.

This is more than just another point on the map; it’s an adventure that begins with the first step on any of its many trails. Monterroso has become a true discovery for eco-tourism enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic rural life of Galicia, where time seems to slow down and the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and ancient trees.

Along the trails of the Ulla River

The central lifeline of the region is the river Ulla. Its 132-kilometer course has become the foundation for a network of scenic walking routes. The main trail, which passes through Monterroso, is designed for a wide range of visitors. With its low level of difficulty, it is ideal for families with children as well as seasoned hiking enthusiasts. The walk takes just under four hours on average, but time passes quickly here, as every turn in the trail reveals new, breathtaking views.

The route leads travelers through dense groves of birch and mighty Galician oaks, known locally as “carballos.” Their canopies form a thick green shelter, providing protection from the sun. The path is constantly crossed by small streams and rivulets flowing into the Ulla, whose melodic babbling creates a soothing background sound. In places, the trail turns into wooden boardwalks and bridges spanning gullies, and after another river bend, a small waterfall might come into view. These spots seem made for stopping, taking a break, and fully immersing yourself in the moment, forgetting the bustle of city life.

Relaxation for body and soul in A Peneda

After an active walk, there’s nothing better than a full rest in nature. Monterroso offers a beautiful recreational area, A Peneda, located right on the riverbank. It’s not just a picnic spot, but truly an oasis for family leisure. The highlight of the area is the “piscina fluvial”—a natural river pool where you can cool off in clean running water on a hot day. For fishing enthusiasts, there is a designated section for trout fishing.

The area is fully equipped for a comfortable stay: there are stone tables, permanent barbecue grills, restrooms, and even a small bar-restaurant where you can sample local cuisine. For those wishing to extend their visit to this paradise, a campsite operates nearby. Sports enthusiasts will also find a tennis court. Peneda is a place where you can spend the whole day enjoying the tranquility and beauty of Galician nature.

A journey through time and tradition

Monterroso attracts not only with its natural beauty. This region is rich in history and cultural traditions. A few years ago, in 2023, a wonderful initiative called “Descubrindo a Comarca de Lugo e as Terras da Ulloa con Guido Guía” was launched here. This project, aimed at promoting the heritage of ten municipalities, has proven incredibly successful. It offers guided tours, tastings of local gastronomic specialties, and performances by traditional music groups, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the region’s culture.

The municipality itself is home to valuable architectural landmarks. Among them, the standout is Paso de A Laxe, a majestic 16th-century estate, as well as several Romanesque-style churches, such as the church in Bidouredo. These buildings stand as silent witnesses to the rich past of these lands. But to show that the city is not just about history, lively events are held here regularly, such as the annual biker gathering that fills the streets with the roar of engines and a festive atmosphere. Getting to Monterroso is quite easy: the journey from major cities like A Coruña, Ourense, or Vigo takes about an hour, making it an ideal destination for a weekend trip.
