The wedding ceremony of Cayetano Martínez de Irujo and Bárbara Mirjan, held at the Cristo de los Gitanos church in Seville, was without exaggeration one of the social highlights of the season. The celebration, marking the culmination of the couple’s nine-year relationship, brought together the crème de la crème of Spanish society. Among the many elegant guests, special attention was drawn to ‘Espejo público’ host Susanna Griso, whose outfit caused quite a stir in fashion circles.
Choosing the perfect ensemble for an October wedding in Seville is no easy task, requiring a keen sense of style and knowledge of protocol. Griso’s look struck many as impeccable, yet there were those who considered it completely out of place. Designer Juan Avellaneda was the first to voice his critique, expressing his strong disapproval on social media. In his view, the combination of textures, details, and shades created a sense of disharmony. He stated outright that he did not like the look, calling it unsuccessful.
Popular Instagram blogger Seli Monde, known for her witty critiques of celebrity outfits, also joined the chorus of disapproval. With biting humor, she compared the host’s wide-brimmed Pamela hat to a lampshade, noting that such a headpiece visually shortens the figure and turns its wearer into ‘doña Croqueta’.
However, stylist and television colleague Jesús Reyes immediately came to the presenter’s defense. He issued a detailed statement, primarily addressed to Juan Avellaneda. Reyes argued that from the perspective of style, protocol, and the overall concept of the look, there could be no complaints about Susanna. He described her appearance as striking and impeccable. Special praise was given to the dress by designer Jorge Redondo. The azure blue shade, which the stylist called one of his favorites, and the perfect cut, in his words, created a magnificent silhouette.
Reyes also emphasized the thought put into the details. He explained that, unlike some other guests who appeared in church with bare shoulders, Griso did absolutely the right thing by draping a shawl over herself. This allowed her to comply with the church dress code, while at the banquet the shawl could be removed. The headpiece by Balel, a brand appreciated by Queen Letizia herself, was described as a true work of art. Reyes couldn’t resist a jab at the critic: he hinted that Avellaneda rarely speaks positively about anyone except his friend Nieves Álvarez, which casts doubt on his objectivity. He also corrected the designer, clarifying that the shawl was not red but coral. Susanna Griso herself responded to the controversy with restraint, noting that she is always open to constructive criticism. In conclusion, Reyes summarized that the look turned out to be very ‘television-friendly’ and perfectly suited for such an occasion.
