In recent years, Spain has seen a noticeable increase in the number of transactions involving used cars imported from Germany. More and more Spanish car buyers are looking for suitable options on the German market and then registering the vehicles in Spain.
The main reason for this trend is the wide selection of models that are difficult to find in Spanish dealerships. This is especially true for cars under ten years old with additional features, which in Spain are often only available for an extra charge. In addition, the cost of such vehicles in Germany is often lower than in the local market, particularly when it comes to mid- and high-end brands.
The advantages of buying a car abroad include not only a variety of configurations, but also the opportunity to purchase a vehicle with features already installed—options that would significantly increase the final price in Spain. This makes German deals especially attractive for those looking for the best value for money.
However, importing a car from Germany involves certain expenses. The buyer needs to pay for registration in Spain, which costs nearly €100. After that, a mandatory technical inspection is required, with fees ranging from €100 to €150. Issuing Spanish license plates will cost an additional €30–50. A certificate of conformity (COC) is also needed; sometimes this is provided free by the seller, but in some cases it can cost up to €250.
An additional registration tax is charged, the amount of which depends on CO2 emissions. If the car emits more than 200 g/km, the tax can reach up to 14.75% of the vehicle’s value. Don’t forget about travel expenses to Germany, including tickets, accommodation, and fuel for the return journey. Altogether, these costs can total up to €2,000, and even more if you use specialized service companies.
German car brands are in highest demand among Spaniards. This is because more of them are sold in Germany, offering buyers a wider selection and more competitive prices. The most commonly imported brands to Spain are BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Volkswagen, and Audi. The most popular models include the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Audi A4, and Porsche Macan.
Thus, despite additional costs and logistical challenges, buying a car from Germany continues to attract Spanish drivers. For many, it’s a chance to get a modern, well-equipped vehicle at a more affordable price than on the domestic market.
