Grants up to 4,500 euros New rules for electric car subsidies in Spain

Which companies are eligible and why European manufacturing has become the decisive factor

A new subsidy program for electric vehicles has launched in Spain. Not everyone can now receive up to 4,500 euros—car features and assembly location are both key factors.

In 2026, the Spanish electric vehicle market faces an unexpected twist: the government is launching a large-scale subsidy program, but with strict conditions. Only those who choose an electric or hybrid car manufactured in Europe will be eligible for financial support. This decision has already sparked intense debate among car enthusiasts and dealers, as hundreds of millions of euros and thousands of potential buyers are at stake.

The authorities are betting on the development of their own automotive industry and the protection of European jobs. This approach not only boosts demand for eco-friendly vehicles but also supports local factories, which have recently felt pressure from Asian competitors. For many buyers, it’s a chance to upgrade their vehicles with significant savings, but not everyone will be able to take advantage of the new offer.

New terms

Unlike previous programs, subsidies are now available only for zero-emission vehicles that have undergone final assembly in the European Union. This applies to both passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The grant for individuals reaches up to €4,500, while vans and light trucks can receive up to €5,000. Motorcycles and quadricycles are eligible for support ranging from €1,100 to €1,500.

Special attention is paid to price: the maximum cost of a passenger car eligible for the subsidy must not exceed €35,000 excluding taxes and discounts. If the price is below this threshold, the amount of aid increases by a quarter. For more expensive models, the support percentage is reduced. In this way, the state encourages the purchase of affordable electric vehicles rather than premium models.

An additional bonus is provided for cars where not only the final assembly but also partial battery production takes place in Europe. In this case, the subsidy amount can increase by another 10%. This approach is clearly aimed at strengthening the position of European manufacturers and reducing dependence on imported components from Asia.

Who is eligible for payments

The program covers individuals, companies, and sole proprietors registered in Spain. For private buyers, there is a restriction: only one car per person. Businesses can receive support for the purchase of up to ten vehicles. It is important to note that these subsidies cannot be combined with other government programs, such as the MOVES Flotas Plus plan.

The government also requires that the vehicle be first registered in Spain after January 1, 2025. This condition excludes the possibility of receiving assistance for used cars or vehicles imported from other countries. In addition, dealers are obliged to provide an extra discount of at least €1,000 when selling new electric cars and vans.

Special conditions apply for legal entities: they can take advantage of the program not only when purchasing, but also when leasing or renting. This opens up additional opportunities for companies in logistics, delivery, and service sectors to renew their fleets.

A European focus

The key feature of the new initiative is its strict emphasis on European production. Only vehicles that have undergone final assembly at EU plants are eligible for the maximum subsidy. If part of the battery assembly is also performed in Europe, the amount of the grant increases. This approach not only supports local industry but also contributes to the development of new manufacturing chains within the EU.

Authorities emphasize that the program aims to strengthen the long-term position of European brands in the domestic market. This decision has already sparked discontent among some importers, who fear losing part of their clientele. However, Spanish and European manufacturers see new opportunities ahead: increased orders, job creation, and the development of innovative technologies.

At the same time, experts point out that such measures may lead to higher prices for certain models and a temporary shortage of specific vehicles. Nevertheless, the government insists: betting on European manufacturing is an investment in the country’s economic and environmental future.

How to obtain a subsidy

To apply for assistance, buyers must go through dealerships that cooperate with regional authorities. The customer needs to provide documents confirming the vehicle meets all program requirements. After verification and approval, funds are transferred directly to the seller’s account, allowing the car’s price to be reduced at the time of purchase.

There is a separate procedure for companies and entrepreneurs, enabling them to apply for a subsidy when signing a leasing or rental agreement. Importantly, all program participants must be registered in Spain and hold proper tax status. Regional administrations monitor compliance, helping to prevent misuse and ensure transparent fund allocation.

If program conditions are violated, for example, by attempting to receive a subsidy for a car that doesn’t meet the criteria, penalties and repayment of received funds are imposed. This approach aims to increase participant responsibility and reduce the risk of fraud.

The Auto+ program is a continuation of previous initiatives to support electric mobility, but features stricter requirements and a focus on European manufacturing. Authorities expect that the new rules will not only speed up the shift to eco-friendly transport but also strengthen the position of Spanish and European manufacturers in the domestic market.

Auto+ is a government subsidy program for the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles, launched in Spain in 2026. Its main feature is that it supports only those vehicles manufactured within the European Union. The program offers payments of up to €4,500 for individuals and up to €5,000 for commercial vehicles, along with additional bonuses for European-made batteries. Auto+ is part of a large-scale strategy to develop eco-friendly transport and reinforce the standing of Europe’s automotive industry.
