The electric vehicle market is experiencing a pivotal moment that could shift the balance of power: Tesla, for the first time in a long while, is facing a situation where the number of cars produced far exceeds the number sold. This is more than just a statistic — it’s the largest gap between production and actual deliveries in four years, and it has already raised concerns among investors and analysts. In the first quarter of 2026, the company built 408,386 vehicles but sold only 358,023. As a result, over 50,000 unsold cars have accumulated in stock, which is highly unusual for Tesla.
The situation is worsened by the fact that Tesla’s shares fell by more than 5% in a single day amid this gap, and since the start of the year, the drop has already reached 20%. Although sales grew by 6% compared to the same period last year, there was a 14.3% decrease from the previous quarter. This marks the sharpest decline in recent years, and the market has taken notice.
Causes and consequences
In the US, where Tesla has traditionally seen the highest sales volumes, analysts from Autonews and Cox Automotive estimate quarterly deliveries at between 110,000 and 122,196 vehicles. This represents a 4.6–15% decrease compared to the previous quarter. Key factors include the expiration of tax incentives for electric vehicle buyers in the US and the lack of approval for the FSD (Full Self Driving) system in European Union countries. According to experts, these issues will continue to pressure demand at least through the end of this year.
In Europe and other regions, the situation is also far from optimistic. Although Tesla has traditionally managed to balance supply and demand, the company is now forced to store a record number of vehicles in warehouses. For comparison: in the first quarter of 2024, the gap between production and sales was about 46,500 vehicles, which was already considered an alarming sign. Now this figure has grown even higher.
Expectations vs Reality
Ahead of the quarter, Tesla lowered its delivery forecasts, taking into account the analyst consensus of 365,645 vehicles sold. However, even this modest target was not met: the final figure came in lower, while independent estimates by StreetAccount anticipated around 370,000 deliveries. A similar trend is seen in the energy storage segment: instead of the expected 14.4 GWh, the company managed to deliver only 8.8 GWh, which is also below last year’s results.
The bulk of sales still comes from the Model 3 and Model Y, which together accounted for 341,893 vehicles. The remaining 16,130 units include the Cybertruck, Semi, and the discontinued Model S and Model X. This skew in the sales structure shows that new models are not yet able to compensate for waning interest in the brand’s main products.
Market and Competitors
As Tesla grapples with an excess of inventory, competitors are wasting no time. New players and technologies are emerging in the market, reshaping the competitive landscape. For instance, as noted by russpain.com, the launch of Volvo’s hydrogen trucks has already sparked serious interest among carriers and could present a challenge to the electric vehicle segment. In this climate, Tesla is compelled to seek new solutions to maintain its leadership and retain investor confidence.
In the coming months, all eyes will be on how the company manages surplus vehicles and whether it can restore a balance between production and demand. For now, investors and experts continue to closely follow market trends, assessing the outlook not only for Tesla but for the entire electric vehicle industry.
Founded in 2003, Tesla has become a symbol of automotive revolution through its mass adoption of electric vehicles and innovative technologies. Under Elon Musk’s leadership, the brand has repeatedly surprised markets with unconventional solutions and bold projects. However, the current surplus of inventory and declining sales in key regions are confronting Tesla with new challenges, demanding swift adaptation and fresh strategies to protect its position in the global market.
