With just four months to go before the anniversary Mobile World Congress (MWC) opens in Barcelona, organizers are already facing a shortage of exhibitor space. In 2026, the event will mark its twentieth anniversary in the Catalan capital and is expected, for the first time, to completely fill all available areas. Interest in participating is so high that many companies risk being left out—demand for exhibition stands now exceeds the venue’s capacity.
This year, organizers have decided to focus on new directions. For the first time at MWC, special zones will be introduced dedicated to space technology, satellite communications, and aviation. In addition, on the eve of the congress, a separate event on the Circuit Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló will be held, focusing on innovations in electric mobility. Here, top tech executives will gather to discuss the future of transport and charging solutions.
The space shortage has become especially acute since last year’s visitor numbers returned to pre-pandemic highs. Although there are plans to expand the Fira de Barcelona complex with a new Hall 0 pavilion, it won’t be available to participants before 2028. Until then, organizers are having to get creative to accommodate everyone. One solution is the creation of The Airport of the Future area, which will be located at the southern entrance to the exhibition center and dedicated to advanced airport and aviation technologies. The main partner for this space will be Airbus.
New Horizons and Challenges for the Largest Technology Forum
Inside the Fira complex, a dedicated area will be set up to discuss ‘new frontiers,’ showcasing innovations in satellite communications, quantum technologies, and the use of 5G in space. Organizers are confident these topics will become key for the industry in the coming years, as satellite connectivity can close gaps in global digital infrastructure.
Leading global brands in the mobile industry are expected to attend, with the exception of Apple, which traditionally skips MWC. Among the confirmed companies are Starlink and SpaceX, though it is still unknown whether their owner will appear in person. However, the heads of these firms have already confirmed their attendance.
Alongside the main program, the 4YFN startup zone in Hall 8 will continue to operate — last year, over a thousand young companies gathered there. Even more participants are expected this year. In addition, part of the events will be held at Montjuïc, where Talent Arena will be located as a hub for seeking and attracting new professionals to the industry.
Focus on Artificial Intelligence and the Global Agenda
The anniversary MWC will revolve around six key themes, all united by the concept of artificial intelligence. These include intelligent infrastructure, AI-based business solutions, new approaches to communication, and technology for all. In total, around 3,500 companies and exhibitors will take part in the exhibition.
This year, international politics were once again a topic of discussion. With the ongoing conflict in Gaza and sanctions against Israel, it remains unclear whether Israeli companies will be able to participate in the congress. Organizers emphasize that they will comply with the decisions of local authorities and the exhibition center if any restrictions are imposed on certain countries.
Mobile World Congress 2026 is set to be the biggest and most eventful in Barcelona’s history. The mobile technology industry is gearing up for new records and unexpected breakthroughs, while the city once again becomes the focal point for digital leaders from around the world.
