Travelers’ desire to discover pristine corners rich in history and nature is once again on the rise. In the very heart of the Valencian Community lies a municipality that has only recently gained national recognition and is poised to become one of the most sought-after short-trip destinations in 2026. Its inclusion in the prestigious “Most Beautiful Villages of Spain” list places it at the forefront of cultural and mountain tourism.
This recognition came as the result of a rigorous evaluation, passed this year by only four localities in Spain. As explained by the president of the association, Francisco Mestre, such strict selection “emphasizes that quality is more important than quantity.” Among this exclusive group, Alpuente stands out in particular—the first municipality in the province of Valencia to be awarded this honor. Nestled in the comarca of Los Serranos, this medieval enclave captivates with its mountain landscapes, historical heritage, and a unique blend of Andalusian fortresses, dinosaur footprints, and traditional villages where time seems to stand still.
Visitors to Alpuente are greeted by a monumental ensemble officially recognized as a historic and artistic complex. Here, the ruins of an Andalusian castle, the La Veleta watchtower, and fragments of ancient walls still trace the outlines of the medieval settlement. The town’s architectural heritage is further highlighted by a thirteen-arch aqueduct and a church built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. The presence of paleontological sites, such as Yacimientos de Corcolilla and Cañada París, along with a paleontological museum, make this area a focal point for educational and scientific tourism—especially appealing for families with children and history enthusiasts.
All this is complemented by Alpuente’s remarkable natural surroundings. Hiking trails connect the municipality’s villages, inviting travelers to discover ancient juniper groves and canyons shaped by time. Between scenic viewpoints, rural chapels, and historic farmsteads, Alpuente offers a fully immersive travel experience where visitors can leisurely enjoy history, nature, and local traditions. Following recent recognition, this destination has become one of those must-visit places in the province of Valencia, well worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime.
RUSSPAIN Reference: The association “Los Pueblos más Bonitos de España” (The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain) was established in 2011, modeled after similar French organizations. Its main goal is to promote small towns—mostly rural—with outstanding cultural and natural heritage. To be included in this prestigious list, candidates must undergo a thorough audit based on more than 40 criteria, including the state of their architecture, cleanliness, preservation of traditions, and quality of tourist infrastructure. Membership in the association significantly boosts a village’s tourist appeal and fosters its economic development.
