The Barcelona football club has announced that their upcoming Champions League match against Greek side Olympiacos will take place at the Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. The game is scheduled for October 21 and will kick off at 18:45 local time. The decision is linked to the ongoing renovation of the city’s main stadium.
The club noted that preparations for the opening of Spotify Camp Nou are in full swing. Specialists are currently addressing issues recently raised by city authorities. Only after these are resolved will Barcelona be able to obtain permission to host matches with fans in the stands. Municipal officials stress that approval will only be granted once the venue is fully deemed safe.
The club’s management is considering a return to the renovated stadium as early as October. October 18 is being named as a likely date, when Barcelona is set to face Girona in the national championship. According to experts, the requirements of city services are not particularly difficult, and the club hopes to complete all work on schedule. However, separate regulations apply to European matches. For instance, UEFA mandates that both side sectors must be open, and the maximum capacity should not exceed 45,000 spectators.
Just a few days ago, there were doubts in Barcelona about whether the stadium would be ready in time for the match against Olympiacos. It has now been confirmed that the game will take place at Montjuïc. The next possible Champions League home match at their regular stadium could be on December 9, when the Catalans face Eintracht Frankfurt.
A special UEFA permit will be required to return to Spotify Camp Nou for a Champions League game before January. The European football organization insists that all group stage matches are played at the same venue. Since the first two home games (against PSG and Olympiacos) have already been scheduled at the Olympic Stadium, the club will need additional approval to change venues.
Regarding tickets for the Olympiacos match, season ticket holders for the Olympic Stadium for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons will have priority to purchase tickets from October 6 to 8. Ticket prices range from 11 to 37 euros, depending on the chosen sector. After this period, sales will open to other club members with a 20 percent discount, as well as to the general public.
