In Northern Spain, a Hidden Village with a Galician Soul Can Only Be Reached by an Impressive Suspension Bridge

Un pueblo en Asturias al que solo se puede llegar cruzando un precipicio

On the border of Asturias and Galicia lies a settlement almost untouched by time. To reach it, you must cross an 80-meter suspension bridge over the river. This unique spot is perfect for those seeking solitude, nature, and unforgettable experiences far from civilization.

On the border between Asturias and Galicia, surrounded by mountains and forests, lies the small village of Riodeporcos, seemingly frozen in time. This secluded spot in the municipality of Ibias is an ideal destination for those seeking to escape city life and enjoy nature. The village’s unique feature is its inaccessibility: the main route here is via an impressive pedestrian suspension bridge stretching over the Navia River.

The crossing is an 80-meter-long structure made of metal and wood, suspended 20 meters above the water. Traversing this bridge is an adventure in itself, leading into a world where modern technology and fast-paced living feel far away. There is an alternative route—a forest trail from the village of Sena—but its difficult terrain and poor condition make the bridge not only the preferred way, but also the most exciting. The most popular route to the bridge starts from the Galician town of A Fonsagrada.

Riodeporcos, located within the Fuentes del Narcea Natural Park (Parque Natural de las Fuentes del Narcea), has preserved its authenticity. Here, visitors can see traditional stone houses draped in grapevines and stroll along cobbled streets. The village has no car traffic and almost no mobile coverage, allowing for total immersion in a tranquil atmosphere. Notable landmarks include the Capilla de San Roque and the only rural hotel with its own wine cellar. Thanks to its unique microclimate, sunnier than the regional average, the area is known as the “sun of Asturias.”

The settlement also serves as the starting point for hiking trails. One of the most popular is the circular route through the Bustelín Gorge (Desfiladero de Bustelín), spanning 17 kilometers. The path leads past abandoned villages, remnants of ancient Roman gold mines, and viewpoints with stunning vistas. The local wildlife is rich and varied—brown bears can even be spotted here. The combination of history, scenic landscapes, and seclusion makes Riodeporcos a unique destination for travelers seeking peace and coolness during the summer months.
