The fountain season at the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso Palace opened with a grand launch attended by around 4,000 visitors. This event not only brings the spirit of the 18th century back to the park, but also highlights the unique engineering that supplies water to the fountains purely through gravity. This approach preserves the site’s historical authenticity and ensures efficient water use, which is especially relevant in a changing climate.
The launch was organized by Patrimonio Nacional, which is traditionally responsible for the preservation and management of the complex. This year’s season will run until summer, with nearly fifty fountain displays scheduled, each dependent on the water level in the reservoirs. The opening route featured the sequential activation of the Canastillo, Ranas, Fuente de los Baños de Diana, and Fama fountains. Technical operations were overseen by Luis Vallejo, chief fountain master of Patrimonio Nacional, who manually controlled the water flow, adjusting the shape and height of the jets. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, such details make the visit especially memorable for guests of all ages.
Traditions and new features
This year, organizers have decided to diversify the program: in addition to the usual routes, the restored Fuente de la Cascada Nueva will be added. Restoration is nearing completion, with the opening scheduled for June. The project is funded from European sources, with a total budget of six million euros. Restoration works include structural reinforcement, waterproofing, marble restoration, and hydro system repairs. This will bring back to life one of the most impressive parts of the ensemble, which has long been closed to the public.
The season will be organized along two routes, alternating weekly until July. The first route is already open, while the second—featuring the Canastillo, Ocho Calles, Ranas, and Fama fountains—will launch on April 8. This approach distributes visitor flows evenly and reduces the load on the water supply system. Special attention is paid to keeping the water clean: it comes from the large pond El Mar, located at the top of the garden, and is exceptionally clear, setting La Granja apart from its French counterparts.
Special dates and experiences
Three special days are scheduled this season when all the fountains in the complex will operate. These dates coincide with major holidays: May 30 (San Fernando), July 25 (Santiago Apóstol), and August 25 (San Luis, patron saint of La Granja). On these days, the park becomes a magnet for tourists and locals, as the spectacle of water cascades and powerful jets reaching up to 47 meters always delights the crowd. A light breeze sometimes carries the spray beyond the basins, offering the boldest visitors an unexpected shower right along the garden paths.
Comparisons to Versailles, which inspired King Felipe V to create La Granja, are common among visitors. However, the local fountains are renowned not only for their architecture, but also for the purity of water supplied from the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. This highlights the unique character of the Spanish complex and distinguishes it from its French prototypes.
Luis Vallejo is a key figure in the life of La Granja’s fountains. His experience and expertise keep the complex hydraulic system running, despite the age of the structures. Vallejo oversees technical operations and also shares the fountains’ history with visitors, explaining how each element works. Thanks to his efforts, the tradition of launching the fountains endures and evolves, making each season a significant event for the entire Segovia province.
