A Medieval Gem of Castile and León Awaits Discovery on the Way of Saint James

The Forgotten City of Kings: Why Oña in Burgos Will Be Your Top Adventure of 2025

Castile and León holds hidden treasures—far from the crowded routes. Experience the spirit of medieval Spain. Explore lesser-known locations in the region.

Spain is not just sun-drenched beaches and the bustle of big cities. In the heart of the country, far from the beaten tourist paths, Castilla y León carefully guards its secrets. Here, in the province of Burgos, lies a small town capable of transporting any traveler a thousand years back in time. This is Oña, a place where time hasn’t merely slowed down—it seems to have almost stopped, tangled in a maze of cobbled streets and massive stone walls.

The undisputed centerpiece and spiritual heart of the town is the monumental Monasterio de San Salvador. Founded back in 1011 by Count Sancho García, the complex became not just a religious center but a genuine pantheon for Castilian kings and nobility. Its architecture is a living chronicle, blending the austere Romanesque with graceful flamboyant Gothic. Stepping inside, visitors find themselves in a space steeped in history. Here lie royal and countly tombs, and the polychrome sarcophagi in the main chapel are truly awe-inspiring. A walk through the monastery is a journey through the ages: from the Romanesque chapter hall to the Gothic cloister and the sacristy, which today serves as a museum. It houses unique medieval textiles from the 10th to 12th centuries, considered exceptionally well-preserved for Europe. It’s no surprise that this place has hosted major cultural events, including the renowned exhibition “Las Edades del Hombre,” which firmly established Oña on Spain’s cultural map.

But Oña is much more than just its monastery. The entire historic center, designated a site of cultural interest back in 1999, is an open-air museum. Walking its streets, visitors can see old houses adorned with coats of arms, explore the former medieval Jewish quarter on Barruso Street, or admire the baroque façade of the women’s monastery. In the main square stands the church of San Juan Bautista, which showcases architectural influences from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Next to it is the San Juan Tower, home to the unique Resin Museum. This exhibition pays tribute to the vanished trade of resin makers, and from the top of the tower, there is a breathtaking view of the town and its picturesque surroundings.

For those wishing to delve even deeper into the past, the Medieval Interpretation Center operates on Barruso Street. Through models, information panels, and audiovisual materials, it tells the story of the town’s daily life and culture during its golden age. Visitors can grasp the true scale of the monastery and its enormous influence on the political and religious life of northern Iberia. This sense of antiquity is felt everywhere—preserved elements of traditional architecture like old laundries, cattle troughs, and ancient gates, silent witnesses to centuries gone by.

In addition to its rich historical heritage, Oña also boasts an exceptional location. The town sits at the gateway to the Oca River Gorge and is just a stone’s throw from the Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil Natural Park. This makes a visit here a truly multifaceted adventure. After exploring the monastery and wandering the ancient streets, visitors can set out on one of many hiking trails, enjoying landscapes where forests give way to mountains and river valleys. This perfect balance between culture and nature makes Oña an excellent destination for both history enthusiasts and travelers seeking solitude and authenticity.
