In northern Spain, between the municipalities of Valdáliga and San Vicente de la Barquera, lies one of Cantabria’s most remarkable beaches — Oyambre (Playa de Oyambre). This is not just a two-kilometer stretch of fine golden sand, but part of a unique ecosystem with a fascinating history that attracts nature enthusiasts and lovers of outdoor activities.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Oyambre Beach has a place in the history of global aviation. In June 1929, it served as an improvised runway for the transatlantic plane ‘Pájaro Amarillo’ (Yellow Bird). The crew, made up of French aviators, was flying from the United States to France, but after an unexpected stowaway boarded and a resulting fuel miscalculation, they were forced to make an emergency landing. The wide and flat sands of Oyambre offered the only safe option. This made it the first place in Spain where a plane that had crossed the Atlantic landed. Today, a monolith by the shore commemorates this event.
The beach is a central part of the Oyambre Natural Park (Parque Natural de Oyambre), established in 1988 to protect valuable coastal landscapes. Covering an area of more than 5,700 hectares, the park includes dunes, cliffs, marshes, and estuaries of rivers such as the Ría de la Rabia (Ría de la Rabia). This area holds the status of Site of Community Importance (LIC) and serves as an important refuge for many species of migratory birds, including the grey heron and mallard. Birdwatching is one of the most popular activities among park visitors.
Today, Oyambre is not only a nature reserve but also a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts, especially surfers. The steady waves of the Cantabrian Sea offer excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced athletes. Surf schools along the coast provide lessons and equipment rental. Campgrounds and guesthouses are available right next to the beach, allowing tourists to fully immerse themselves in the wild nature.
You can complement your visit to Oyambre by exploring the local cuisine. Right by the beach is a restaurant named after the historic airplane — “El Pájaro Amarillo”. Here, guests are offered dishes made with fresh fish, seafood, and traditional Spanish tapas. Thus, Oyambre Beach is a harmonious place where history blends with nature, offering both tranquility and active recreation against the majestic backdrop of the Picos de Europa.
