Legend has it that in the eleventh century, the ruler of Pamplona, Sancho IV, was thrown from this dizzying height—an event that earned him the nickname ‘El de Peñalén’. The observation deck at the edge of an almost 400-meter cliff is a true balcony overlooking the heart of Navarre. The path can be challenging at times and requires stamina, but the reward is breathtaking panoramic views over the entire Ribera. It’s a challenge, but the effort is well worth it.
Those who prefer comfort can drive almost to the very edge by car. An asphalt road from Funes leads to the viewpoint, allowing for an easy ascent to the top. On the way, it is worth stopping at the Gurugú hill, which offers views of Moncayo peak on one side and the Pyrenean summits on the other. For cyclists, this same winding road is an excellent MTB route, where physical effort is paired with the leisurely contemplation of changing landscapes. The starting point for any journey is the town of Funes. From the center, follow the signs to the parish church of Santiago, then towards the cemetery. From there, a winding road will take you to a spacious parking area where you can leave your vehicle. A short, well-marked path among pine trees leads directly to the cliff edge, where the view takes your breath away.
The Barranco de Peñalén is not just a geological phenomenon. It’s a place where you can feel the breath of eternity and the force of nature. The contrast between the dizzying abyss at your feet and an overwhelming sense of tranquility is truly striking. Visiting this corner of northern Spain leaves a deep impression, a reminder of how closely human drama is intertwined with the timeless grandeur of the landscape.
