Secret Route of Cantabria: Hidden Waterfalls and Beech Forests Far From the Crowds

This trail in Cantabria is hidden from everyone—will you dare to find it?

There’s a little-known trail in Cantabria that follows a mountain river, winding through dense woodlands. Discover the untouched wilderness of northern Spain.

For many hiking enthusiasts, northern Spain is a true paradise. Cantabria, with its unique blend of mountains, crystal-clear rivers, endless forests, and charming villages, is a natural gem that never ceases to amaze. While the Picos de Europa are the first to come to mind when it comes to local trails, the region is home to lesser-known paths as well. These offer the same stunning scenery, but in a serene atmosphere, far from the crowds.

One such route is the Canal de las Tejeras River Trail. This circular path begins in the tiny village of Somahoz, near Los Corrales de Buelna, and has rightly earned a reputation as one of the most enjoyable and enriching walks in the area. It’s perfect for anyone looking for an easy family-friendly walk that will appeal to both beginners and seasoned hikers seeking a relaxing outing without excessive physical strain.

The trail stretches for about seven kilometers and can be completed in roughly two and a half hours. Hikers will enjoy a stunning variety of landscapes: riverside sections, woodland areas, natural viewpoints, and spots where only the sound of water prevails. The route begins in the San Andrés neighborhood of Somahoz, where parking is easy after crossing the Besaya River. Information boards here detail the trail and its main landmarks. At the first fork, turn right to reach the first crossing over the river—you’ll need to cross it five more times along the way. Despite this, the crossings are not difficult: decent balance and, of course, a change of shoes are all you need, as the dampness here can catch you off guard.

The trail winds between small waterfalls, natural pools, and makeshift stone bridges surrounded by the lush vegetation of Mount Brazo. The walk begins among oaks and chestnuts, but soon gives way to a dense beech forest where sunlight barely penetrates the leafy canopy. This stretch is especially photogenic in autumn, when the ground turns golden and the air fills with the scent of damp earth. The first—and one of the most beautiful—cascades appears almost right at the start of the path. From here, the trail begins to climb towards the upper part of Mount Brazo, where a mountain refuge belonging to the Orza club is located. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, have a snack, and enjoy the panoramic views of the Iguña, Buelna, and Anievas valleys, which unfold before you like a living postcard.

For those who wish to extend their adventure a bit, there is an opportunity to descend to the pre-Romanesque chapel of San Román del Moroso. It is located just a kilometer from the shelter, if you follow the forest road. This small temple, built in the 12th century, is an architectural gem that still preserves elements of Mozarabic art. It stands as a silent witness to Cantabria’s medieval history, hidden among the trees. After visiting the chapel, you can return to the shelter and begin your descent back to Somaos, or retrace your steps along the original trail to once again enjoy the river scenery. Just before finishing, the last viewpoint invites you to linger for a few minutes and watch as the forest stretches to the horizon, accompanied by the sound of flowing water.
