In one of the districts of Manacor (Manacor) on Mallorca (Mallorca), police officers and housing inspectors carried out a joint inspection that led to an unexpected discovery. On private property, they found 11 structures resembling shacks, where tenants were living. Despite a complete lack of basic living conditions, residents were charged rent for these spaces.
Inspectors noted that the conditions inside were unsanitary: waste and organic trash were scattered everywhere, and the shared bathrooms were in a deplorable state. The electricity was installed illegally, and the buildings themselves appeared dangerously unstable—roofs and walls were collapsing in places, putting the residents at risk.
All the identified structures belonged to a single owner, who, according to authorities, took advantage of people in desperate need of housing. Official proceedings have now been initiated against the owner, which could result in severe penalties.
According to the current legislation of the Balearic Islands (Baleares), organizing such accommodation is considered a particularly serious violation. Each structure is subject to a separate fine, and the total amount could reach nearly one million euros. Authorities emphasize that such cases will be dealt with as harshly as possible to prevent exploitation and the spread of life-threatening living conditions.
