4.2-Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Off Almeria Coast in the Evening

Residents of Adra and nearby areas felt tremors: what is known about the aftermath

On the evening of October 29, an earthquake struck near Almeria. The epicenter was located at sea, 28 km from Adra. Residents of several towns felt the tremors, but no damage was reported.

On the evening of Wednesday, October 29, residents of the coastal areas in the province of Almería felt seismic tremors. At 10:38 p.m. local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2 struck in the sea, about 28 kilometers from the city of Adra. The earthquake’s hypocenter was located several kilometers below the surface, allowing the seismic waves to spread over a wide area.

The tremors were strong enough to be felt not only in Adra, but also in neighboring towns, including El Ejido, La Mojonera, and Dalías. In some homes, people noticed light shaking of furniture, and those especially sensitive to tremors reported feeling alarmed. However, according to preliminary reports, there were no injuries or serious damage.

Seismologists note that such events are not uncommon in this region. Over the past week, three earthquakes have been registered around Almería, and since the beginning of the month, the total has reached thirteen. Still, this latest episode was the most noticeable in the past six months—the last significant tremor was recorded here in August, but its magnitude did not exceed 2.7.

Residents who felt the earthquake have been invited to fill out a special questionnaire, helping experts more accurately assess the spread and intensity of the seismic waves. The survey asks where people were at the time of the tremors, whether they were alone or with family, how they reacted, and if they observed any objects moving inside their homes.

To put things in perspective: the Richter scale, which measures earthquake strength, is designed so that the difference between a 2 and a 4 means the energy released increases by hundreds of times. However, even at a magnitude of 4.2, significant damage is unlikely if the epicenter is far from populated areas and deep underground.

Overall, the situation in the region remains calm. Local services continue to monitor the area, and residents are returning to their daily routines, discussing the event on social media and among themselves. Authorities remind everyone to stay calm and follow instructions in case of aftershocks.
