From November 6 to 9, Madrid transforms into the epicenter of vibrant events dedicated to the Day of Almudena, the city’s patron saint. During these days, the streets come alive with music, dancing, and the aroma of freshly baked pastries. Organizers have prepared a packed program for both locals and tourists. All events are free of charge, making the celebration easily accessible to everyone.
This year, special attention is given to music: as part of the ‘Patronas 2025’ series, talented female artists from a variety of genres—from jazz to pop-rock—will perform. Concerts will take place at iconic city venues as well as outdoors. In addition, guests can enjoy folklore shows featuring traditional 18th-century dances and rhythms reminiscent of old Madrid.
Local favorites are not forgotten either. At Plaza Mayor, the famous Almudena crown—a sweet treat first introduced in the late 1970s—will be handed out again. This year, over a thousand slices are expected to be served, and as usual, lines begin to form well before the distribution starts. The program also includes colorful parades, floral displays, and performances by brass bands.
Festive parades and musical evenings
On November 7 and 8, traditional floral events will take place in the square in front of the Catedral de la Almudena, where everyone is invited to bring flowers. On these days, there will also be parades featuring military veterans and representatives from regional communities. In the evenings, the city comes alive with the sounds of jazz, samba, and soul, with both well-known and emerging artists taking the stage. A special highlight is the concert by the municipal orchestra, which traditionally draws a full house inside the cathedral.
On Sunday, November 9, the celebration reaches its peak: in the morning, a solemn mass and procession take place, followed by musical performances along the route from the cathedral to Plaza de la Villa. This day offers a chance to hear not only local groups, but also ensembles playing folk melodies on gaitas and dulzainas. In the evening, the cathedral hosts the final concert of the municipal orchestra, while the Sony Hall will feature excerpts from famous zarzuelas.
Traditions and new experiences
Organizers note that this year’s celebration combines old customs with modern elements. In addition to the classic processions and concerts, visitors can attend interactive workshops to learn madrileño dances or try their hand at making traditional sweets. Special animation programs and creative workshops have been organized for children.
Almudena Day is not just a religious event, but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the authentic festive atmosphere of Madrid. For several days, the city transforms: street performers, musicians, and dancers fill the avenues as locals and visitors join together in a collective outpouring of joy. The celebrations end late in the evening with a final flourish, after which Madrid returns to its usual rhythm—until it welcomes its patron saint again the following year.
