In recent months, the Sant Antoni district in Barcelona has come under the spotlight due to a noticeable decline in its urban environment. This neighborhood, known for its historic market and located in Eixample, has faced increasing issues related to cleanliness, safety, and social tension.
The Barcelona municipality has launched a special program aimed at stabilizing the situation and restoring the district’s former character. As part of this plan, authorities have intensified street cleaning, increased police presence, and enhanced the work of social services. Special attention is being given to combating illegal street vending and supporting people in difficult life situations.
To implement these measures, the city administration is collaborating with local organizations such as Som Sant Antoni, Sant Antoni Comerç, and the charity De Veí a Veí. Together, they are conducting ongoing monitoring of the situation and collecting suggestions from residents on how to improve living conditions.
One of the notable steps has been the reorganization of public space in the so-called ‘superilla’ zone—a part of the district where traffic is restricted. Here, up to a third of street furniture, including benches and bins, is planned to be relocated or removed to enhance comfort and safety for residents and visitors.
Authorities have also increased control over the most problematic areas, where violations of order and illegal trade are most frequently recorded. Simultaneously, specialists from the Public Health Agency and addiction treatment centers offer support to homeless people and those struggling with drug addiction, helping them receive the necessary assistance.
Despite the municipality’s active efforts, many residents express doubts about the effectiveness of the measures being taken. On social media and at community meetings, they talk about daily challenges: deteriorating sanitation, an increase in conflicts, and a sense of insecurity on the streets. Some mention that they fear for their safety, especially in the evening.
In response, residents have started uniting to defend their interests and present demands to city authorities. Shopkeepers also note that the worsening situation is negatively impacting their businesses: customer traffic is dropping, and incidents of aggressive behavior on the streets are becoming more frequent.
Representatives of local associations emphasize that real change requires not only targeted efforts but also a comprehensive approach with adequate funding. In their view, particular attention should be given to supporting the homeless and low-income families, who often cannot access social assistance.
Charitable organizations note that the number of vulnerable residents is growing, and many families are facing financial difficulties and cannot rely on state support. Under these circumstances, community solidarity and mutual assistance between neighbors play an important role.
Overall, residents and entrepreneurs of Sant Antoni believe that the success of the neighborhood revitalization program depends on the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders and a comprehensive approach that will help preserve the unique character and social cohesion of this historic district of Barcelona.
