Spanish banking giant BBVA has announced the launch of BBVA Pay, its own digital wallet developed in partnership with Visa. The new platform is designed for Android and iOS smartphone users and will be gradually made available to all bank customers in Spain. BBVA Pay will allow purchases to be made using NFC technology directly through the bank’s mobile app, bypassing third-party services.
Until now, most Spaniards have used Google Wallet or Apple Pay for contactless payments, which require loading cards into those tech companies’ apps. Now, BBVA customers will have the option to make payments directly through the bank’s application, without sharing their data with third parties. This solution is especially relevant for Apple device owners, as BBVA will become the first bank in the country to offer such integration within the iOS ecosystem.
BBVA and Visa emphasize that the new platform not only expands options for users but also increases competition in the mobile payments market. BBVA Pay is integrated into the bank’s digital infrastructure, ensuring high levels of security and convenience. Users will be able to pay for purchases in stores, on transport, and online, without worrying about sharing personal data with external services.
The introduction of BBVA Pay marks another step towards the further digitalization of banking services in Spain. The bank expects that the new option will appeal to those who value privacy and prefer to use services fully managed by the bank. In the coming months, BBVA plans to expand the wallet’s functionality by adding new features for managing finances and integration with other banking products.
