A recent large-scale study surveyed nearly three thousand residents of Spain’s largest cities, who shared their opinions on key aspects of urban living—from public transportation and safety to access to healthcare, cultural offerings, and cost of living. Based on their responses, a list was compiled of the ten places in Spain that offer the highest quality of life.

Northern Coast: A Harmony of Nature and Urban Life

Vigo tops the ranking. The largest city in Galicia, it boasts a unique mix of vibrant city life and breathtaking natural scenery. Located in the heart of the Rías Baixas, Vigo is famous for its mild climate, outstanding cuisine—especially seafood—and proximity to the idyllic Cíes Islands. The average property price is €2,335 per square meter, while rents are around €10.90.

Bilbao, the capital of the province of Biscay, exemplifies the successful blend of tradition and modernity. The city, transformed over the past decades, attracts visitors with its iconic Guggenheim Museum, a historic district filled with countless pintxos bars, and well-developed infrastructure. Its strategic location near mountains and natural parks makes it a draw for outdoor enthusiasts. Real estate prices here are higher: €3,763 per square meter for purchases and €15 per square meter for rentals.

Gijón, the most populous city in Asturias, also ranks among the leaders. It charms visitors with its vibrant port city atmosphere, lively cultural scene with theaters and festivals, and a beautiful historic center. Housing costs in Gijón average around €2,515 per square meter for purchases and €10.6 for rentals.

Treasures of central Spain

Zaragoza, the capital of Aragón, offers residents a wealth of historical heritage, including the Pilar Basilica and Aljafería Palace, as well as modern spaces like the Water Park. The city is surrounded by picturesque nature, providing many opportunities for outdoor recreation. The average property purchase price is €2,152 per square meter, while rental rates average €11.1.

Valladolid is valued for its rich history, culture, and high quality of life. The city boasts majestic architecture, numerous parks and gardens, and close proximity to the famed wineries of the Ribera del Duero region. The average property price here is €1,909 per square meter, while renting costs around €9.4 per square meter.

Córdoba attracts residents with its warm climate, relatively low cost of living, and excellent transport accessibility. The city features convenient pedestrian areas and a wealth of history—from the Mezquita-Catedral to the Jewish Quarter and its famous patios. Housing here is among the most affordable on the list: €1,259 per square meter to purchase and €8.4 per square meter to rent.

Jewels of the South and Mediterranean

Málaga, one of Europe’s oldest cities, is now a modern and cosmopolitan hub on the Costa del Sol. The birthplace of Picasso offers more than 160 kilometers of beaches, a rich cultural heritage, and a wide range of amenities. Property purchases average €3,652 per square meter, while rentals cost about €15.4 per square meter.

Valencia is a city that has it all: sun, sea, culture, and exceptional gastronomy. Its historic center, with the Cathedral and Central Market, sits alongside the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences. The average property purchase price is €3,227 per square meter, while rental rates average €15.5 per square meter.

Alicante attracts with its mild Mediterranean climate and a comfortable living environment, where the sea and mountains are just a short walk away. The cost of living here is lower than in many other major cities in Spain. You can buy an apartment for €2,655 per square meter, while rent averages €11.8 per square meter.

Seville, the capital of Andalusia, rounds out the top ten. The city boasts a rich cultural heritage and the largest historic center in Spain, home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Life here is vibrant and warm. The average property price is €2,588 per square meter, with rent around €12.9 per square meter.
