We are fortunate to live in a country that truly offers a diverse and breathtaking natural landscape. All across its vast territory, Spain’s geography boasts scenery that is a feast for the eyes of anyone who pauses to take it in. In this sense, Asturias is the perfect region to indulge in its ecosystems, especially during one of our rare trips to the north.
One of the best ways to appreciate the Asturian landscape in all its glory is to take in the view from one of its many scenic overlooks, enjoying the far-reaching vistas their elevation provides. Among the most highly recommended for this experience is, without a doubt, the San Roque viewpoint, located on the outskirts of the town of Lastres.
A Million-Dollar View
Climbing to this unique spot, you’ll be captivated by postcard-perfect views of the Asturian coast, beautifully complemented by the sight of the municipality itself, with its iconic white houses topped by their vivid red roofs, and the Cantabrian Sea beyond. And, of course, if you look further out, you’ll spot the Picos de Europa rising above the natural canvas before you. It’s one of those moments when reality outshines any photograph, the air seeming to ring with a clarity and freshness you can practically feel.
Lastres is one of the most visited Asturian villages year-round, and the San Roque viewpoint is among its must-see attractions. It’s more than just a point on the map—it’s the culmination of a journey through one of Spain’s most picturesque corners. The views from here offer a new perspective on the grandeur of nature and the harmony with which people have integrated their creations into it.
The Road to the Summit
While you can drive up and leave your car at the parking lot, the most adventurous might choose to hike up from the coastal town itself. This option is for those unafraid of a bit of physical effort in exchange for an incredible reward. It’s best to take the route at a moderate pace and wear appropriate footwear, as the climb can be rather steep. But with every step upward, new perspectives unfold, making the ascent an unforgettable part of the adventure.
The route from Lastres to the viewpoint is a journey in itself, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere of an Asturian village—with its narrow streets and steep climbs. It’s a great way to warm up before standing in awe at the summit.
More Than Just Views
On the other hand, the breathtaking views are not the only thing the lookout has to offer. There is also a relaxation area on an elevated spot, where you can take refuge under the centuries-old trees and unwind near the Ermita de San Roque. In addition, you’ll find a children’s playground, a barbecue zone, a fountain, and tables—perfect for enjoying a day out with family and friends. It’s the ideal picnic spot, where food tastes better and conversations flow more easily against the backdrop of a stunning panorama.
Places like this truly let us appreciate the nature that thrives in such an enchanting autonomous community as Asturias. Landscapes that look as if they’ve stepped out of a painting become reality when you venture up to viewpoints like San Roque.
Picos de Europa is a mountain range in northern Spain and part of the Cantabrian Mountains. It spans three autonomous communities: Asturias, Cantabria, and Castilla y León. In 1918, the first national park in Spain was established here, originally called the Covadonga Mountain National Park. In 1995, it was expanded and renamed Picos de Europa National Park. The park is renowned for its dramatic karst landscapes, deep gorges, and rich biodiversity.
