A trial has begun in Porto Cristo (Porto Cristo), Mallorca (Mallorca), drawing significant public attention. A woman and a man are in the dock, accused of a particularly serious crime—the death of a premature baby girl born in a car in November 2023.
According to the prosecution, the pregnant woman was about 26–27 weeks along when she suddenly went into labor right in the car. The second defendant was driving, while another woman was also present in the vehicle. After the baby was born, the mother and the driver allegedly acted together and deliberately. They realized that the child was alive but nevertheless decided to abandon her. The man stopped the car, took the newborn, and threw her into a garbage container.
Investigators believe the baby had no chance of survival—she could neither defend herself nor call for help. As a result of these actions, the child died. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, triggered by several factors: a lack of medical assistance during childbirth and a head injury sustained either from falling after birth or already inside the container.
The third person involved, who was in the car, is charged with inaction. Prosecutors say she understood the gravity of the situation but took no steps to save the child and did not call for medical help. She faces a substantial monetary fine.
Hearings are taking place at the Court of the Balearic Islands (Audiencia de Baleares). A date has already been set for the start of jury proceedings—October 24. On this day, the jury will be formed, after which the trial will begin: the charges will be read, evidence presented, and the accused questioned.
The prosecution is demanding the harshest possible sentence for the mother and the man—life imprisonment with the possibility of review. The public is closely following the developments, awaiting the court’s decision in this tragic case.
