A tragedy occurred Wednesday afternoon in the Boo de Guarnizo area (Cantabria): a cyclist was killed after being struck by a freight train at a railway crossing designated for service use. The incident happened around 1:45 p.m., as the cyclist was crossing the tracks and a train was passing through.
Emergency medical teams, as well as officers from the Guardia Civil and local police from Astillero, responded swiftly to the scene. Rescuers attempted to assist the victim, but his injuries were fatal. The area around the railway tracks was cordoned off to allow investigators to work and to ensure safety.
Train service suspended
Immediately after the accident, the railway company decided to temporarily halt train service on the C1 line, which connects several towns in Cantabria. This measure was taken at the request of law enforcement to allow specialists to work at the scene without endangering lives or health.
One hour after the tragedy, service on one of the tracks was partially restored, but was soon suspended again due to the need for further investigation and to ensure the safety of all railway participants.
Emergency response
Police and railway staff worked at the scene for several hours. Their task was not only to determine the circumstances of the incident but also to coordinate efforts to restore train service. Passengers en route had to wait for service to resume, and some trains were delayed or canceled.
Authorities urged citizens to be cautious when crossing railway tracks, even at service crossings. Such tragedies serve as a reminder of the need to strictly follow transportation safety rules.
