In the municipality of Sant Joan d’Alacant, in the province of Alicante, Civil Guard officers have arrested a 41-year-old man who was internationally wanted by Montenegro. His name appeared on the country’s most wanted fugitives list and he was wanted for a series of serious crimes, including murder, involvement in organized crime, and illegal arms trafficking.
The arrest took place on November 16 during a routine check at one of the city’s checkpoints. Officers stopped a rental car and, upon inspecting the driver’s documents, found that he was the subject of an international arrest warrant. After verifying the information in police databases and confirming it through Interpol, the man was immediately taken into custody.
Montenegrin authorities accuse the detainee not only of murder, but also of arms trafficking, dealing in explosives, document forgery, and abuse of office. According to the investigation, all these crimes are linked to the activities of organized criminal groups operating both in the Balkans and beyond.
Road controls: a crucial tool in catching criminals
The arrest was made possible thanks to a routine check regularly carried out by Spanish law enforcement to ensure public safety. Such inspections help identify individuals fleeing justice and prevent further crimes. This time, an ordinary vehicle stop led to the capture of one of Europe’s most wanted criminals.
After the arrest, officers from the Guardia Civil completed all necessary procedural steps and handed the man over to Central Investigative Court No. 2 of the National Court. The court will now consider whether to extradite the suspect to Montenegro, where he faces prosecution on several serious criminal charges.
International Cooperation and the Fight Against the Mafia
Spanish law enforcement stresses that the success of such operations is only possible through close cooperation with foreign partners. In this case, prompt coordination with Interpol and information sharing with Montenegrin authorities played a decisive role. This enabled a swift identity confirmation of the detainee, linked him to the crimes, and prevented a potential escape.
In recent years, Spain has become one of the key partners in the fight against international organized crime. Regular joint operations, data sharing, and the adoption of modern technologies make it possible to identify and apprehend criminals who try to hide within the country or use it as a transit point for their activities.
The importance of preventive measures and next steps
The Civil Guard notes that preventive measures and ongoing road checks are proving to be effective tools in combating crime. Such actions not only help detain dangerous fugitives but also increase the safety level for all residents and visitors in the country.
In the near future, the detainee will remain in custody until the court decides on his extradition. Spanish authorities continue to work with international organizations to prevent the suspect from evading responsibility and to ensure his transfer to justice in Montenegro.
