On Friday, August 22, Spain is expected to see significant changes in weather conditions, especially in the eastern regions. Eight provinces are at risk due to forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and coastal waves. According to the national meteorological service, adverse weather will affect Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Albacete, Barcelona, Tarragona, Mallorca, Menorca, and Girona.
Since nightfall, downpours and thunderstorms have struck the coast of Catalonia, and by morning the bad weather had spread to the Balearic Islands. In the second half of the day, rain and storms are expected in the southeast inland areas. Girona is under a high wave alert, which will make maritime conditions more challenging. In the rest of the country, rainfall will be light and sporadic, mainly in the north and the Pyrenees. The Canary Islands are forecast to see clouds and haze.
Temperatures in most regions will continue to rise, especially in central and southern areas, where thermometers will climb above 34 degrees. Meanwhile, on the Mediterranean coast and in Gran Canaria, the heat will ease slightly.
Regional weather: where to expect rain and temperature fluctuations
Eastern provinces of Spain will be in the spotlight today due to unstable atmospheric conditions. While most of the country enjoys dry and warm weather, sharp changes are possible in the east.
Comunidad Valenciana and Murcia: Cloud cover and the likelihood of strong thunderstorms are forecast in these regions, especially in inland areas during the afternoon. In Murcia, hail is possible in the Altiplano area. Temperatures will range from 20 to 32 degrees, and by evening, easterly winds will strengthen.
Catalonia and the Balearic Islands: Along the Catalan coast, the morning will begin with thunderstorms, particularly in Barcelona and Tarragona. Clouds will persist throughout the day, and brief showers are possible in the eastern areas and the Pyrenees. In Girona, a storm warning is in effect due to high waves. In Mallorca and Menorca, thunderstorms are expected after noon, some of which may be intense in places. Temperatures on the Balearic Islands will range from 28 to 30 degrees, with light winds and sea breezes.
Castilla-La Mancha: In Albacete, isolated but intense thunderstorms are forecast, mainly in the eastern mountains. The morning will start with clear skies and fog in the hills, but cloudiness will increase by evening. Maximum temperatures will reach 35 degrees in La Mancha and Sierra de Alcaraz, while it will be slightly cooler in Hellín and Almansa.
Andalusia, Aragon, and inland regions: Predominantly clear weather is expected in Andalusia, though brief showers may occur in the east by evening. In Aragon, cloud cover will increase in the mountains, where light precipitation is possible. Temperatures in these regions will range from 30 to 36 degrees, with mostly light easterly and westerly winds.
Canary Islands and the north of the countryVariable cloud cover and dusty haze are expected in the Canary Islands, especially in the central and southern regions. Isolated brief showers are possible in the mountains of Tenerife and La Palma. Cloudy weather will persist in northern Spain, with a chance of light rain along the Cantabrian coast and in the Pyrenees. Temperatures here will remain mild—around 24–25 degrees—with a northerly wind of varying strength.
Thus, Friday in Spain will be marked by weather contrasts: the eastern provinces are preparing for heavy rain and storms, while the rest of the country will continue to enjoy summer warmth.
