Residents of the coastal areas of Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà in the province of Girona have received emergency alerts on their mobile phones. The reason is an approaching storm that could cause dangerous sea conditions and create hazardous driving. Authorities strongly advise staying away from the shoreline, avoiding walks along seafront promenades, and not ignoring temporary beach access restrictions.
Meteorologists warn that in the next 24 hours, waves several meters high are expected in the northeast of Catalonia. During this period, it is especially dangerous to be on piers, breakwaters, and other structures extending into the sea. Local municipalities have already begun restricting access to the most vulnerable parts of the coast to minimize public risk.
The towns on alert include Portbou, Colera, Llançà, Port de la Selva, Cadaqués, Roses, Castelló d’Empúries, Sant Pere Pescador, l’Escala, Torroella de Montgrí, Pals, Begur, Palafrugell, Mont-ras, Palamós, Calonge i Sant Antoni, Castell-Platja d’Aro, Santa Cristina d’Aro, and Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Severe weather conditions
The Catalonia Meteorological Service (Meteocat) reports a potential for up to 100 millimeters of rainfall in 24 hours. The region is under a high alert level—4 out of 6 possible points. Heavy rain is expected, raising the risk of flooding and local inundations, especially in lowlands and coastal areas.
In addition to rough seas, some roads may see snowfall and gusty winds. Drivers are urged to exercise maximum caution and check road conditions in advance if travel is necessary. Restrictions are already in place for trucks, agricultural machinery, and vehicles with trailers on some roads. In certain cases, chains are required for travel.
Recommendations for the public
Authorities emphasize that during severe weather conditions, it is important not to take risks or attempt to cross flooded roads. Residents are advised to prepare for possible transport disruptions, stock up on water, and keep vehicle fuel tanks full. If travel is not essential, it is best to postpone it until conditions improve.
Special attention is given to the safety of children and the elderly. They are advised to stay indoors and avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary. Pet owners are also encouraged to keep animals under supervision and away from the sea or rivers.
Restrictions and measures
Municipal services and traffic police have stepped up patrols in high-risk areas. Emergency services are prepared to respond quickly to citizens’ calls if needed. Additional fences and warning signs have been installed along the coast to prevent accidents.
The situation may change in the coming hours, so residents are advised to follow official updates and not ignore alarm signals. Authorities remind everyone that taking basic precautions can help avoid injuries and other negative consequences of the bad weather.
