A scandal has erupted in Navalmoral de la Mata involving former municipal councilor Paula González Morato. In the midst of the election campaign, she published an open letter explaining why she left the Partido Popular (PP). According to González Morato, she faced sexist behavior from current mayor Enrique Hueso and received no support from party leadership.
In her letter, the former councilor emphasized that her decision was not made on a whim. She claims to have repeatedly asked party leaders for help and mediation since the beginning of the year. However, according to her, none of her complaints were heard and the situation only got worse. González Morato noted that it was important for her to work in an atmosphere of respect and dignity, but the party’s lack of response forced her to step down.
The letter also states that her concerns were confirmed after the release of an audio recording involving the party spokesperson. She thanked regional representative José Ángel Sánchez Jullá for his attention but lamented that it did not lead to real action. Despite leaving the party, González Morato promised to continue working in the municipality guided by honesty and responsibility.
Party response
After the publication of the letter, Mayor Enrique Hueso categorically denied the accusations of sexism and abuse of power. He announced his intention to take legal action to protect his reputation. The regional leadership of the Partido Popular also issued a statement rejecting the claims, calling the actions of González Morato politically motivated. According to them, her statements are related to the fact that she was not included on the party’s electoral lists for the upcoming elections.
Party secretary Abel Bautista stated that he has evidence of meetings between González Morato and representatives of the rival Socialist Party (PSOE) in the region. This statement was made in an attempt to cast doubt on the sincerity of her allegations and to highlight the political context of the situation.
Response and Consequences
The scandal sparked widespread reaction both in Navalmoral de la Mata and beyond. On social media and in local media, there is vigorous discussion about the accusations against the mayor as well as the party leadership’s response. Many residents have expressed support for González Morato, while others believe the situation is merely part of the election campaign.
At the same time, some members of the municipal council note that such conflicts negatively affect the image of local government and may influence the outcome of the elections. Questions about the party’s internal culture and its attitude toward women in politics have once again become a focus of public attention.
Next Steps
Paola González Morato stated that she has no intention of leaving her position on the city council despite pressure and attempts to discredit her. She emphasized that she will continue to demand respect and open dialogue, and also hopes for changes in the region’s political culture.
It is still unclear whether this conflict will lead to any personnel or structural changes within the Partido Popular. However, the story of González Morato has already sparked discussions about sexism and internal democracy in Spanish political organizations.
