Fuel prices in Spain surge by 62% ahead of Easter record regional disparities

Rising fuel prices strain household budgets

In Spain, diesel prices have jumped by 62% ahead of Easter. The gap between regions has reached a historic high. New government measures have not halted the rise in travel expenses.

The sharp rise in fuel prices ahead of Easter came as an unexpected blow to millions of Spanish families. This year, the cost of diesel and gasoline has increased so much that even temporary tax relief could not offset the higher travel expenses. For many households, this means having to revisit holiday plans and face extra costs that were difficult to predict.

According to Facua, the average price of a liter of diesel A at Spanish gas stations has reached 1.773 euros, which is 62.5% higher year-on-year before taxes. After deducting taxes, the price stands at 1.282 euros per liter, compared to 0.789 euros last year. Gasoline 95 has also become more expensive: the national average is now 1.563 euros per liter, up 38.6% over last year’s pre-tax level. Despite the VAT reduction from 21% to 10% and the cut in diesel excise tax, drivers are still seeing higher totals on their receipts.

Market and Consumer Response

The introduction of tax breaks, approved by Congress and valid until the end of June, has not led to the expected drop in prices. As Facua notes, many gas stations have compensated for lower tax burdens by raising the base cost of fuel. This has given rise to so-called ‘hidden’ price hikes, which are especially noticeable during peak travel periods. The consumer organization has called on the government to set maximum fuel prices to protect citizens from excessive costs and potential abuses by sellers.

Authorities are discussing new anti-crisis measures. Minister Félix Bolaños stated they are ready to consider proposals to stabilize the situation. Partido Popular leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo called for further tax cuts, including on personal income tax and energy VAT. Government representatives, including Yolanda Díaz and María Jesús Montero, presented their position on supporting the population.

Record differences between regions

This year, fuel price differences between provinces have reached a historic high. In some regions, the diesel price varies by up to 76 cents per liter within the same area. The largest gap was recorded in Ciudad Real—76 cents, in Valencia—67 cents, and in Almería—66 cents. For 95-octane petrol, the biggest differences were noted in Barcelona (68 cents), Navarra (57 cents), and Cuenca (56 cents). According to russpain.com estimates, filling a 50-liter tank can save up to 38 euros if you choose the cheapest station.

Such a situation is forcing drivers to carefully select where they refuel and reconsider their travel routes. For many families, this adds extra stress at a time when long journeys and family visits are typically planned.

Impact on household budgets

The rise in fuel prices has coincided with instability in global energy markets and increased transportation costs. For Spanish households, spending on petrol and diesel accounts for a significant portion of their weekly budget. As prices continue to climb, many are forced to cut back on travel or look for alternative ways to get around. This impacts not only Easter plans, but also the overall standard of living.

In recent years, Spain has already experienced waves of fuel price increases, but the current surge stands out for its scale and the speed of change. In 2024, for example, prices rose noticeably but without such pronounced regional differences. Analysts point out that similar situations could recur if long-term measures to regulate the market and support consumers are not implemented.

Looking back at similar periods, it is worth noting that in 2022 and 2023 Spaniards also faced rising fuel prices ahead of major holidays. The government then introduced temporary discounts and subsidies, which helped stabilize the situation to some extent. However, this year has shown that short-term measures are no longer as effective, and the gap between regions is becoming increasingly stark. This highlights the need for new solutions to protect citizens’ interests and ensure fuel remains accessible across the country.
