Granada ends year with record surplus and new investments in culture and social sectors

How the city moved into the black and what awaits locals next

The Granada city administration has reported a budget surplus. Authorities have increased spending on culture and social support. Find out how this will impact residents’ lives.

The Granada City Council has closed the financial year with a reported surplus of 9 million euros. The municipal administration presented a new budget that was prepared and approved on schedule. According to Mayor Marifrán Carazo, these financial results confirm the city’s stability and positive growth. Officials emphasize that consistent fulfillment of obligations and responsible management have brought tangible benefits to residents.

The new budget for 2026 allocates 358.3 million euros, a 7.6% increase compared to last year. Over the past two years, the city has managed to reduce its negative balance from 65 to less than 10 million euros. The average payment period to suppliers has remained under 30 days for 16 consecutive months. City officials believe these figures reflect sound and transparent financial administration.

Focus on Culture

The budget places special emphasis on developing the cultural sector. Spending on culture has been increased by 40%, totaling 7.1 million euros. These funds will support Granada’s bid for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2031. The administration is confident that investing in culture will make the city more appealing to tourists and residents alike, and will strengthen its standing on the European stage.

The mayor emphasizes that the goal of the budget is not only to balance revenues and expenditures, but also to create conditions for building a more socially oriented, green, and modern city. Authorities believe these measures will help Granada successfully face future challenges, including the potential bid for European Capital of Culture status.

Transport and urban environment

A significant portion of the funds is allocated to developing public transport. Financing in this area has increased by €2.5 million, reaching a total of €24.6 million. This will keep bus fares unchanged and make the city’s transport network more sustainable and convenient for passengers. The authorities are also continuing a municipal improvement program that includes expanding pedestrian zones, planting new trees, and creating additional green spaces and playgrounds.

Urban infrastructure renewal projects cover key areas of Granada. The plan aims to make the city more comfortable to live in, improve the quality of the urban environment, and ensure public spaces are accessible to all residents.

Social support

In 2026, special emphasis has been placed on social programs. Spending on support for dependent citizens and vulnerable families has risen by 70% and now exceeds 40 million euros. Funding for assistance to people with disabilities and those requiring care has doubled. The budget also includes new support measures for families, such as a one-time payment of 200 euros for the birth of a child, along with tax breaks and subsidies for purchasing, renting, and renovating housing.

Authorities emphasize that social policy remains a priority. Increased funding will expand the range of services and improve the quality of support for the city’s most vulnerable residents.
