Heavy Rain and Sharp Cold Snap: Warnings Issued in Northeast Spain and the Balearic Islands

El tiempo en España cambia: ¿dónde se esperan lluvias, granizo y vientos fuertes?

Unstable weather persists in Spain: the northeast and the Balearic Islands are expecting heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperature. Weather warnings have been issued in several provinces, with the possibility of hail and strong winds in some regions.

Spain continues to experience unstable weather due to the influence of an Atlantic trough. Meteorologists warn of new waves of rainfall, thunderstorms, and a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially in the northeastern regions and the Balearic Islands.

A total of 16 provinces are under weather alerts. In particular, orange warnings have been issued in Castellón, Barcelona, Girona, as well as on the islands of Mallorca and Menorca, due to heavy rains and storms, which could bring up to 40 liters of precipitation per square meter within an hour. The most challenging conditions are expected in Catalonia and the Balearics, where intense downpours with hail are possible.

Yellow alerts have been declared in Valencia, Lleida, Tarragona, and Huesca. Rain and thunderstorms are also forecast here, although their intensity will be lower. In Cantabria, Navarra, Vizcaya, and Gipuzkoa, less severe but still significant precipitation is expected, which may complicate daily life for residents.

Coastal areas of Andalusia—Málaga, Almería, and Granada—are under warnings due to rough seas. In Alicante, despite the overall cooling trend, temperatures in some coastal municipalities could reach up to 36 degrees.

According to meteorologists, clouds and storms will persist in the north of the Iberian Peninsula and in the Balearic Islands. This is typical for late summer, when cold air masses at high altitude collide with moist Mediterranean air, leading to intense weather phenomena. In contrast, central and southern regions are expected to have mostly clear skies, except in eastern Teruel and northern areas of the Valencia Community, where brief showers with hail are possible in the afternoon.

The main change in the weather is a noticeable drop in temperature. After several days of abnormal heat, especially inland, temperatures will fall sharply. In the north, center, and northeast, maximum values will decrease to 25 degrees and below, whereas just the day before, in several cities, temperatures exceeded 30 degrees. Along the Mediterranean coast, including Alicante, the heat will persist, and in some places, temperatures will remain above 35 degrees. No significant changes are expected in the Canary Islands: it will remain warm, and the wind will hold its strength.

Forecasters note that storms may be accompanied not only by heavy rains but also by lightning and hail. This combination increases the risk of accidents on the roads and can cause damage to agriculture, especially in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Pyrenees area. Localized heavy downpours are also possible on the eastern coast of Cantabria.

Wind will be another significant factor. In the Empordà area, a strengthening of the northern wind is expected, while in Cantabria and the Alboran Sea, very strong gusts are possible. In the rest of the country, westerly winds will prevail, but in Levante, the direction will shift to north and east throughout the day.

In addition to rain and wind, fog is forecast in Galicia, and in the northern mountains, dense morning clouds may make transportation difficult. The Balearic Islands can expect haze, which, combined with humidity and thunderstorms, will create a heavy atmosphere on the islands.
