Last Sunday, one of the most devastating train disasters in recent years occurred on the rail line near Adamuz, northeast of Córdoba. Two high-speed trains collided on a section previously considered absolutely safe. According to preliminary reports, the tragedy claimed 41 lives and left more than a hundred injured. Rescue teams and experts are still at the scene, working to piece together what happened.
The first hours after the accident were marked by chaos and panic. Passengers trapped in the mangled carriages called for help, while local residents rushed to the site to assist the wounded. Medical crews and firefighters arrived as quickly as possible, but even experienced rescuers were shocked by the scale of the destruction. The authorities immediately declared a state of emergency in the region, and train traffic on this route was completely halted.
Investigators have already identified key coordinates: the site of the collision and the point where the first train derailed—about half a kilometer before the main accident. According to experts, this is where the chain of events leading to the tragedy began. The exact cause of the derailment remains unclear: whether it was a technical failure, human error, or something else. What is known is that after derailing, the train ended up on the opposite track, where the fatal collision occurred.
