Discover Spain's hidden retreats and escape the city chaos

Discover a breathtaking route that’s perfect for a winter hike. Wooden walkways above the sea await you. Find out all the details of this journey. An unforgettable experience for the whole family.

The start of 2026 is the perfect time to break free from routine and treat yourself to a little adventure. As temperatures continue to drop, it’s an ideal opportunity to enjoy nature in all its glory and recharge after the relentless pace of city life. In this regard, Galicia stands out as one of the most attractive destinations, offering unique landscapes and endless opportunities for outdoor activities.

This region offers countless opportunities for activities that make the most of its natural treasures. If you find yourself here, don’t miss the chance to explore the fantastic hiking trails spread throughout the area. One of the most popular among travelers is the Con Negro trail (ruta do Con Negro), which showcases the untouched beauty of the coastline in O Grove, province of Pontevedra.

Starting your journey

This circular route, a little over 7 kilometers long, can be completed in less than four hours. With its low difficulty level, it’s an ideal choice for a family outing. You can start the walk from several points, but one of the most convenient is the marina at San Vicente do Mar in the region of O Salnés. From here, you’ll head toward Buraca da Alondra beach, following comfortable wooden walkways built right along the shore.

Continuing this exhilarating walk along the water’s edge, you’ll soon reach Piedras Negras Beach. The trail, marked by a wooden walkway, will lead you to a monument dedicated to the volunteers who helped clean up after the Prestige oil tanker disaster. The monument stands on a promontory jutting into the sea, but before reaching it, you can enjoy the views of Farruco Beach, known for its half-shell shape and fine golden sand. It’s a perfect place to pause and recharge before continuing your journey.

History and Nature

Once you set off again, just a few minutes later you’ll arrive at Barrosa Beach with its tiny bay offering postcard-worthy views of the island of Sálvora. This spot also holds its own historical significance. If you go back to 1811, in the middle of the Spanish War of Independence, this very place served as a landing site for troops during the conflict. This adds a special historical aura to your walk.

Next, passing the headland and Abeilleira Beach, your gaze will turn toward Canelas Beach, known for its viewpoint at the San Vicente artillery battery. From here, the wooden boardwalk gives way to a small marked path that continues the route. The sea remains your companion, but the landscape begins to shift: it becomes rockier, with striking granite formations shaped by water and wind erosion, and the vegetation grows lusher and wilder.

The Home Stretch

As you follow the trail, you’ll pass by Agueira Beach and Catinheira Beach, completing the circular route. Returning to the starting point leaves you with a sense of satisfaction and pleasant fatigue. This trail is truly an excellent choice for a full family day outdoors, combining physical activity, breathtaking scenery, and even a touch of history.

Galicia, and especially the Rías Baixas coastline where O Grove is located, is renowned not only for its natural beauty. This region is one of Spain’s top gastronomic destinations, world-famous for its top-quality seafood such as percebes, mussels, and octopus. The area is also home to the celebrated Albariño white wine. That’s why a hike along the Con Negro trail pairs perfectly with sampling local delicacies at one of O Grove’s many restaurants.
