In the northern part of Barcelona, in the Vall d’Hebron district, stands one of the city’s most unique historical estates — the Martí i Codolar residence (Residència Martí i Codolar). This place is renowned not only for its architectural heritage, but also for its fascinating history spanning several centuries.
Originally, this site was home to a 17th-century rural estate known as Can Gausachs. In the early 18th century, it came under the ownership of a monastic order, which used it as a farm and administrative center. After the monks left, the estate became known as Granja Vella and gradually took on new significance for the city.
At the end of the 18th century, the estate was acquired by a wealthy bourgeois family, who transformed it into a summer residence. It was during this period that the first French-style elements and decorative features appeared, giving the complex the character of an aristocratic mansion.
The true heyday of the estate came in the 19th century, when it was purchased by the Martí i Codolar family. Lluís Martí Codolar undertook extensive renovations: new pavilions were built, romantic gardens were laid out, and a large pond was created. During this time, the estate became a popular meeting place for Catalan nobility and the cultural elite.
One of the most unusual episodes in the estate’s history was the appearance of a private zoo on its grounds. At the end of the 19th century, exotic animals such as giraffes, elephants, ostriches, and tropical birds lived here. In 1892, the city authorities purchased the animal collection, marking the beginning of the Barcelona Zoo. Among its first inhabitants was an elephant, who quickly became the new zoo’s star attraction.
Over the years, the estate hosted members of royalty and prominent figures. Among its visitors were Fernando VII, Alfonso XIII, and other representatives of the Spanish monarchy. During the Civil War, the building was occupied by various organizations, and after the conflict, it served as a temporary shelter for orphaned children evacuated from the front.
In 1946, the Martí i Codolar family transferred the estate to the Salesian Order. Just a few years later, a seminary and spiritual education center opened here. Since then, the complex has preserved its historical character while becoming a venue for retreats, educational programs, and cultural events.
Today, the Martí i Codolar residence continues to welcome guests. Visitors can stay at the hospedería, stroll through landscaped gardens, see a pond with turtles, and visit the monument to the founder of the Salesian Order, Don Bosco. Of special note is the garden designed in 1922 by Salvador Alarma y Tastas, which was conceived as a space for rest and reflection.
The complex is open for individual and group visits by prior appointment. Guests have access not only to the historic interiors and gardens but also to modern amenities: a dining hall, meeting rooms, and a 24-hour reception. Entry to the gardens is usually free for organized groups.
The Martí-Codolar Residence is an example of how historical landmarks can maintain their uniqueness while remaining relevant in the 21st century. It combines a rich past, architectural beauty, and a sense of seclusion, making it a special place for residents and visitors to Barcelona.
