In Asturias, the prolonged sale of one of the region’s most renowned country estates continues— a property associated with Francisco Franco and Carmen Polo. The house, where the newlyweds spent their first wedding night in 1923, still has not found a new owner despite a significant price reduction.
Located in the municipality of Llanera, the estate is known as La Casina de La Piniella. Tucked away behind dense greenery, it spans nearly 300,000 square meters. In the past, this residence served as a summer retreat for Franco’s family and today remains in the hands of their descendants.
Initially, the property was listed for five million euros, but after years on the market, the price has dropped to 1.9 million. Even with this adjustment, buyer interest remains minimal. Real estate experts note that its historical significance and unique location have not outweighed the challenges of maintenance and the need for restoration.
The main house, built in the 18th century, has two floors and an attic, with a total area of around 360 square meters. The grounds also include additional buildings: a staff house, storage facility, stables, chicken coop, and a spacious garage. Altogether, these features highlight the estate’s status and scale.
The interior of the house has preserved the features of traditional rural mansions of that period. The ground floor includes a small hall, two dining rooms with fireplaces, a separate chapel, and a spacious kitchen. The second floor houses six bedrooms, several bathrooms, a reading room with a fireplace, and a terrace facing south.
After her father’s death, Carmen Polo inherited this estate, which since then became the Franco family’s favorite retreat. Here, the future dictator developed a fondness for salmon fishing in local rivers, and the estate itself turned into a family nest, filled with memories and history.
Today, the property is seen as a potentially attractive opportunity for investors, particularly in the hotel or restaurant business. The selling agency highlights its advantages: vast land, privacy, and proximity to Oviedo (Oviedo), which is just 15 kilometers away.
However, despite all its merits, neither the price nor the business opportunities have yet attracted serious buyers. According to experts, potential investors are deterred not only by the cost of restoration but also by the historical context associated with the name Franco. As a result, more than a century after the wedding of Franco and Carmen Polo, the estate is still waiting for a new owner ready to take responsibility for its future.
