How the Personal Relationship Between Pedro Sánchez and Salvador Illa Influences Spanish Politics

Una amistad que cambia el equilibrio de poder en el país

Pedro Sánchez and Salvador Illa have built a strong personal and political relationship that has withstood the challenges of the pandemic, internal party conflicts, and difficult elections. Their alliance has become one of the key factors of stability in Spanish politics in recent years.

In recent years, Spain’s political scene has been shaped to a large extent by the close cooperation between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the head of the Catalan government, Salvador Illa. Their partnership has gone far beyond formal duties, serving as an example of how personal relationships can influence state decision-making.

The rapprochement between Sánchez and Illa began at the height of the pandemic, when Illa, then Minister of Health, was forced to relocate to the La Moncloa complex. Amid strict restrictions and constant pressure, both politicians found themselves at the center of crisis management—a situation that helped build trust between them. Their joint efforts during this challenging period laid the foundation for further cooperation.

Illa, who was not initially part of Sánchez’s inner circle, quickly became one of his key allies. Catalan socialists had supported Sánchez since the intraparty elections when he was vying for party leadership. It was at that time that groups of supporters formed, maintaining the close ties between the two politicians to this day.

In 2019 and early 2020, Illa participated in negotiations with the republicans on forming a government. His appointment as Minister of Health came as a surprise to many, but this move allowed Sánchez to strengthen his position in Catalonia and open a dialogue with the regional elites.

In 2021, Illa once again surprised the political community by running for President of the Generalitat. Although he won the election, he was unable to form a government; however, his influence in the region continued to grow. In the following years, the Socialists of Catalonia became a key support for the central government, especially in matters related to resolving the Catalan crisis.

In May 2024, Illa secured a decisive victory in the regional elections, unseating Pere Aragonès from the presidency. During the campaign, he emphasized Sánchez’s role in stabilizing the situation in Catalonia and advancing a policy of reconciliation. This success further confirmed the effectiveness of their partnership.

The relationship between Sánchez and Illa extends beyond work. They regularly spend time together, including vacations with their families in the Canary Islands. Daily communication and mutual support have become an integral part of their political lives.

Even during periods of political uncertainty, such as when Sánchez unexpectedly took a break from work in the spring of 2024, Illa remained loyal and continued to fulfill his duties. After Sánchez’s return to the political scene, their alliance only grew stronger, as was evident during joint public appearances.

Within the Socialist Party, Illa is considered one of Sánchez’s most reliable allies. His willingness to support decisions made by the central leadership and to take responsibility in difficult situations has strengthened the party’s position both in Catalonia and on the national stage.

The question of Illa’s possible future as head of the Spanish government remains open. Despite his popularity among party members, he prefers to focus on governing Catalonia and shows no interest in national leadership. According to him, his political career has already exceeded all expectations, and Sánchez will continue to play a key role in Spanish politics for a long time to come.

Thus, the partnership between Sánchez and Illa has become one of the main factors of stability and predictability in Spanish politics in recent years. Their personal friendship and mutual trust allow them to respond effectively to challenges and to bolster the Socialists’ standing in both Madrid and Barcelona.
