How Spaniards Are Saving on Groceries in 2025 and What Has Changed

Supermarket Savings Secrets in Spain 2025: What Locals Are Choosing

Shopping habits are changing in Spain: residents are looking for new ways to save on groceries. Find out which strategies families are choosing and why stores are revising their offers. Discover how shopping attitudes have evolved in 2025.

September in Spain has long ceased to be just the end of summer — for many, it is a time to reassess the family budget after the holidays. In 2025, Spaniards are increasingly looking for ways to cut grocery expenses, and their shopping habits now differ noticeably from just a few years ago.

Where a trip to the supermarket once meant full shopping carts, now more and more people are limiting themselves to small baskets. Only about 15% of shoppers spend more than 100 euros per week on groceries. Meanwhile, nearly half now prefer to shop daily instead of once a week as they used to. Those who still plan their menus in advance say this helps them stay within their budgets.

Popular saving strategies include choosing seasonal fruits and vegetables, which are both cheaper and, in most people’s opinion, tastier. About two thirds of shoppers are convinced that such products allow them to save considerably. Another approach is opting for supermarket own-brand items. Nearly half of Spaniards believe this helps them spend 10-25% less per year without sacrificing quality.

Comparing prices between different stores has become a habit for many. Despite the rise of online shopping, most people still choose traditional stores. The reason is simple: it’s easier to control expenses in a supermarket and resist impulse purchases. Plus, there are often better deals, and people feel more in control of their spending.

When choosing a store, price remains the decisive factor. Proximity to home, special offers, and loyalty programs are also important. Every sixth customer is willing to switch stores for better deals. Direct discounts and promotions like “two for the price of one” are especially popular. Interest in personalized coupons and bonus cards is gradually increasing.

In 2025, major chains such as Dia are actively implementing new tools to attract customers: personalized discounts, prize draws, and partnership programs. Thanks to these initiatives, some families are saving up to €900 a year. Over the year, the company invested €175 million in promotions and discounts, which allowed prices to be reduced on hundreds of products, especially fresh foods.

Together with nutrition experts, stores are developing special recommendations for shoppers: how to create a balanced menu, choose healthy products, and store them correctly. This not only helps to save money, but also encourages healthier eating and reduces food waste. As a result, even amid rising prices, Spanish families are finding new ways to maintain a balance between quality and cost when shopping.
