When it becomes necessary to change your insurance
Car owners in Spain often consider switching insurance companies if they are dissatisfied with prices or service quality. Deciding to move to another insurer requires careful attention to avoid unnecessary expenses and legal complications.
Steps to take when switching insurers
Before signing a contract with a new company, it is important to carefully review the terms of your current policy. Insurance is usually renewed automatically, so you need to find out in advance the deadline for opting out of renewal. By law, a written notice of cancellation must be submitted at least one month before the end of the current insurance period. Failure to meet this deadline may result in double payments or penalties.
The next step is to analyze the offers available on the market. When choosing a new policy, you should consider not only the price, but also the extent of coverage. It is essential to ensure that the new insurance does not worsen your terms, unless you are deliberately declining additional options.
After finalizing all the details with the new insurer, you must officially inform your previous company of your decision to terminate the contract. It is best to end the old policy before signing the new one to avoid overlaps and uninsured periods.
Documents you may need
To obtain a new policy, you will need to provide a specific set of documents. Typically, these include an ID card, driver’s license, vehicle documents, technical passport, proof of passing the ITV, as well as information about previous insurance and claim history. Sometimes a copy of the invoice for the previous policy and the general terms of the old contract may also be required.
Terms and conditions for contract termination
Spanish law requires that notification of policy cancellation must be sent to the insurer at least one month before the end date of the coverage period. If the termination is initiated by the company, the notice period increases to two months. Exceptions are possible if contract conditions change—in such cases, the insurer is obliged to inform the client two months in advance. Additionally, after signing a new policy, the consumer has 14 days to withdraw without giving a reason.
In any case, the notification must be made in writing. Failure to follow the procedure may lead to automatic renewal and the need to pay for two policies at once.
Possible consequences and refunds
If you switch insurers without official notification, the previous company has the right to demand payment for the new period. As a result, the vehicle owner may be required to pay for two policies simultaneously. In addition, late termination may result in penalties.
In the event of early termination of the contract, a refund of the unused portion of the premium is generally not provided. Exceptions are possible only in specific cases, if expressly stated in the policy terms.
